CHESLEY RICHARD JANES
28-Jul-1928 - 03-May-2020
Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory of Chesley
Janes, Chesley (Ches) Richard - Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, passed
peacefully away in his 92nd year on May 3, 2020 at Shannex Northumberland Hall
Nursing Home, Amherst, NS.
Always a happy, friendly smile, never a frown, always helping when one was
down. It is with love and peace in our hearts, we announce the passing of our
amazing father, grandfather, and great grandfather, "Poppy Ches" known by
everyone. Poppy loved his family with kindness, patience, and humour passing
along family traditions, tricks and fun games that made the grandchildren and
great grandchildren giggle and Poppy laugh with joy. He used to say "any day
on this side of the sod is a great day" and life for Poppy was always
"wonderful."
Ches was a hard working man who appreciated the simple things in life. Every
occasion was a reason to celebrate and he prepared many family meals including
fish, Newfoundland fish and brewis, hearty breakfasts, and the best Sunday
dinners ever prepared. The radio was always on and Irish Newfoundland music or
classic hymns and gospels filled the home. Poppy loved visiting his sons and
grandchildren in Ontario. He always brought a piece of Newfoundland with him
often a full salmon or other treats.
Poppy loved his shed and his garden. He grew many types of flowers and loved
to sit and enjoy time in the garden on a sunny day. He was always helping
neighbours on Mount Royal Avenue, living there for over 50 years. Ches was
recognized by the City of St. John's with a citizen's award for his helping
hand in the community.
Poppy enjoyed fishing trips with his sons, blueberry picking with his
daughter, painting his house inside and out and helping others do the same,
and keeping his cars shining and pristine.
Born on the St. John's South Side, he was predeceased by his wife of 60 years
Ruth (nee Fowler), parents Gladys and William Janes, brothers Harold and
Charles. Leaving with loving memories his daughter Gladys (Arnot) in Amherst;
sons, Greg (Rosa) in Ottawa, ON and Derek (Sherri) in London, ON;
grandchildren whom he adored Andrea (Jason McInnis), Susan, Jennifer (John
McNally), Kristen (Eric Borzi), Shannon, William, Shawn, Julia, Clara, Katie
and Thomas, great grandchildren David Coish, Julia McInnis, Benjamin Borzi,
Nolan and Calla McNally, sisters-in law Teresa Mullaly and Maureen Puddicombe,
all the Janes, Mullaly and Puddicombe nieces, nephews, and cousins of St.
John's NL.
For all of his life, he was a true Southsider and Newfoundlander. May Poppy
rest in peace. We will sail on for you "Long may your big jib draw."
