JEAN'S OBITUARY

Bentley, Jean Ann (Purdy) - 79, Westchester. It is with deep sadness that we
announce the passing of Jean Ann (Purdy) Bentley of Westchester. Jean passed
away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16th, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Health
Centre, Truro. Born on May 30, 1941 in Oxford, she was the third child of
seven and eldest daughter of the late Merrill and Gladys (Read) Purdy. Jean
was educated in the Oxford school system and then attended vocational school
in Halifax where she received her secretary diploma in 1958. Shortly
thereafter she began her career at Douglas and Rogers insurance company in
Amherst and in 1960 worked for the federal custom and drawback. On July 22,
1961 Jean married the love of her life, Avard Bentley. They had five children
and in 1975 she took on her most important role of staying home to raise their
children and help build the family business, Bentley's Blueberries and Maple.
Jean was a member of the Amherst Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary
until 1981 when she moved to Westchester. She immediately joined the
Westchester Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and held the position
of Treasurer for over 25 years. Jean was the Secretary and Treasurer of the
Nova Scotia Maple Producers from 2000 to 2010 and a member of the North
American Maple Syrup Council. Jean will be extremely missed by her husband,
Avard; son, Michael (Debbie), Amherst; daughters, Nancy (Lester) Barrett,
Lindsay, ON; Sandra (Randy) Moss, Enfield; Marney (Keith MacLeod), Nine Mile
River; Mary (Shane) Gabie, Downingtown, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Danielle
Bentley, Erin and Kyle MacInnes, Morgan Moss, Lauren and Logan Gabie; great-
grandchildren, Joseph (Joey) MacInnes, Ava Colpitts; brother, Vaughan
(Pauline) Purdy, Ottawa, ON; sisters, Faye MacDonald, Bolton, ON; Phyllis
(Albro) Hunter, Riverview, NB; Debbie Smith, Amherst. Jean was predeceased by
brothers, David and Winston. A private family visitation will be held Friday,
June 19, with a private family funeral service on Saturday, June 20, both in
MacDiarmid's Funeral Home and Crematorium (902-447-2930). Condolences and
