Elmer L. Butt, 87

NEWBURYPORT -- Elmer L. Butt, 87, longtime resident of Newburyport and
Salisbury, died suddenly on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 at the home of his
daughter Sundee and son-in-law Robert Perry, Renovo, Pa.

Elmer and his father before him were avid tuna and stripper fishermen well
known along the river. He came from a sea faring family and his love of the
sea was always with him. His father's family were Newfoundland fisherman and
his mother's father was a sea Captain who sailed into Newburyport when the
river was still deep enough to float his three masted schooner. Long after he
retired Elmer was a familiar figure on the waterfront.

He also enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing in the White Mountains of New
Hampshire; sometimes with his son, Holden. He had great pleasure in traveling
across the country in his camper; visiting every fishing wharf along the east
and southern coasts and then on to appreciate the natural wonders of the
Southwest.

Elmer was born in St. Georges, Newfoundland, the **oldest son of Joseph
Philiskirk (Phil) Butt and Margaret (Morris) Butt**. He came to the U.S. in
the early 1920s and after living in Amesbury and in Tarrytown, N.Y. the family
ultimately settled in Newburyport. The family lived on Lime Street until the
late 1970s.

Elmer and the Butt family were lifelong members of the former First Baptist
Church on Green Street.

He attended Newburyport High School, graduating with the Class of 1942. He has
been a familiar face at the annual reunions for many years.

After High School he joined the U.S. Army and became a telephone
communications specialist. He attained the rank of Corporal and was honorably
discharged in 1946. He returned to Newburyport to what he said was "the
sweetest smell on earth," the smell of the salt marsh.

He worked locally in the metal refinishing industry. He became highly skilled
in the trade and for several years operated a home based antique metal
restoration shop in Salisbury where he worked for private customers, antique
dealers and interior decorators.

Elmer is survived by **four children, daughters, Sundee Perry of Renovo, Pa.,
Heather White of Inwood, W.Va., Avery Mason of Chambersburg, Pa., and son,
Holden of Shamokin, Pa.** He is also survived by three sisters and one
brother, Marie (Mrs. Louis Colby) of Newburyport, Alma (Mrs. George Pingree)
of Merrimac, Zelma (Mrs. Anthony Badessa) of Westwood, and Reginald Butt of
Harbor City, Calif. Also surviving are six grandchildren and nine (and a half)
great-grandchildren. Also **surviving is his former wife and lifelong friend,
Claire**.

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service in Elmer's memory will be held in Renovo,
Pa., in late November. While he enjoyed his years in Pennsylvania, Newburyport
was always home and appropriately his remains will be returned here for burial
at Sawyer Hill. Friends, acquaintances and relatives living in the area are
invited to offer their condolences to the family and pay last respect to Elmer
at a memorial service which will be held at Hope Community Church, 11 Hale
St., Newburyport on Saturday, Dec. 11. Visiting hours are at 1 p.m. and the
memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Pastor Peter Balentine officiating.

Claire A. (Butt) Mason

February 19, 1933 - June 9, 2018

Waynesboro, PA - Claire A. (Butt) Mason, 85, formerly of Newburyport,
Salisbury, and Ipswich, Mass., passed away June 9, 2018, at Colestock Nursing
Home, Quincy Village, in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.

She was born on February 19, 1933, in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada. She
was the only child of Thelma and Clarence Mason. Claire crossed the border at
Calais, Maine, at the age of 19, and became a permanent resident alien in the
United States on April 8, 1952. She moved to Newburyport, Mass., and on March
21, 1953, married Elmer L. Butt and in their 26 years of marriage had four
children.

As her children grew, Claire started a lifelong love of antiques and that kept
her buying and repairing furniture for many years of family life. She then
went on to teach Sunday school at Rowley First Baptist Church. She also led
adult bible study. While living in Salisbury, she started her own jewelry
shop, Gem Togs. To this day, there is still jewelry in her daughter's jewelry
boxes from that endeavor. She also went back to school. First, was the High
School Equivalency Certificate (GED), awarded on Sept., 1970, from the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She had a thirst for knowledge and wanting to
help those in need, she continued her education. Next came a degree from North
Shore Community College in Beverly, Mass., Rehabilitation Assistant Program
with an Associate of Science degree. Her degree gave her opportunities at
Country Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport and Pilgrim House Nursing Home, in
Peabody, Mass., during 1972 to 1977. She really enjoyed helping the people
that had to live their lives in the nursing home environment. Once she said if
the option of Physician Assistants programs had been in place years ago, she
would have loved being a doctor. In 1980, she received her master's in
Education from Antioch University in Cambridge.

Claire resided in Ipswich, Mass., from 1978 until 1995 with very dear friends
Phyllis and Dan Speakman and worked with them in a business called Human
Potential Associates. She made several trips back to Nova Scotia in the 1980s
to do genealogy research on her parent's family. There were pleasure trips to
Guatemala and Mexico enjoying the culture and people. She also became a self-
taught gardener of plants and herbs. She had a natural affinity for gardening
and it remained ingrained in her for the rest of her life. While living in
Ipswich, Claire worked at Eaton Corp., in Beverly as Technical Training
Administrator from 1985 until 1995. In 1995 Claire moved to Pennsylvania and
resided there with her son Holden for a few years and daughter Avery until
2012. After those years, Claire was nearby in her own apartment with Avery
always there for her. Four years after moving to Pennsylvania on September 15,
1999, Claire became a United States citizen!

Claire is survived by all of her children, who were at her bedside when she
passed. Her daughters Sundee E. (Butt) Perry and husband Bob of Bellefonte,
Pa., Heather M. White of Inwood, W.Va., Avery Butt Mason of Chambersburg, Pa.;
and son Holden L. Butt (Mary) of Shamokin, Pa.; her six grandchildren,
Jennifer (Perry) Gray and husband Fran of Phillsburg, Pa., Stephanie (Perry)
White and husband Michael of Chambersburg, Pa., Robert Perry II (Sara) of
Rovigo, Italy, Rebekah (Perry) Cunningham and husband Andy of State College,
Audra (White) Price and husband Zally of Chambersburg, Pa., and Heath White
(Kellie) of Statesville, N.C. These wonderful grandchildren gave Claire 13
great-grandchildren.

In February 2015, Claire and Avery's dog, a Bichon, Pounce, a companion of 15
years, passed on. He was a treasure and brought many great moments to their
lives. Claire was the quiet and soothing one. He would spend many hours
relaxing on her lap. It seems very appropriate they will rest together.

A memorial service to celebrate Claire's life will occur at 1 p.m. on
Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Hope Community Church, 11 Hale St.,
Newburyport, MA, with Pastor Dennis Gill officiating. The family will welcome
visitors prior to the service at 12 p.m. Refreshments will be served for
approximately one hour at the end of the service.

After the chapel service, the family will have a private service at Sawyer
Hill Burying Ground, Newburyport, Mass. Claire will be at rest with other
family members in a truly beautiful and peaceful place. Her spirit we know is
already at peace with our Lord, Christ Jesus. Amen!

Believe this to be the Clarence Albert Mason who m/1 Thelma Audrey Morris.

Hi David- from the obit of Mason- he would have been at Langille's Funeral
home, Barss Corner. There is only one church in Springfield, which is about 25
minutes from here. I wonder if he is buried there. - Bill
