Obit: PORTER, John William

PORTER, John William - 83, High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2002, in High Crest. Born in East Finchley, England, he was a son of the late George "Joshua" and Ida May (Adams) Porter. He was a member of St. David's Presbyterian Church, Springhill and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 17, Springhill. Most of his working years were spent in coal mining, highway construction and farming. He served overseas during the Second World War in Africa, Sicily, Italy, England and Continental Europe from 1942 to 1946. He was an a vid fisherman, hunter, gardener, bingo player and he enjoyed his family. He is survived by sons, William Porter, Springhill; John (Vickie) Porter, River Philip, Cumberland Co.; daughter, Evelyn (Wilfred) Simon, Bouctouche, N.B.; grandchildren, Josh, Nicole and Samantha Simon, Lucas and Ruth-Anne Porter; great-grandson, John Ethan Simon. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Dorothy Ruth Meekins; brother, Ernest; sister, Elsie. Visiting will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in A. H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 10, Rev. Larry Welch officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill. Donations may be made to St. David's Presbyterian Church, Springhill, Parkinson's Society of Canada, Maritime Region or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
