Obit: STEEVES, John Ronald "Jack"

STEEVES, John Ronald "Jack" - Amherst, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2002, in Highland View Regional Hospital, at the age of 77. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Roy William and Winnifred Gertrude (Cole) Steeves. He graduated from Cumberland Regional High School, Amherst and later attended Provincial Normal College, Truro, graduating in 1945. He taught school in circuit schools in Parrsboro and Oxford, four in circuit schools in Hantsport and Wolfville, nine years in Windsor and 26 years in Amherst Regional High School, always teaching Industrial Arts. He retired in Amherst as Department Head. Jack introduced Driver Education to Amherst and became a Master Driver Education instructor. While in Windsor, he was Commanding Officer of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. Jack was past president of the K-40 Club in Amherst, past president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Summer School and the Industrial Arts Teachers Association. While in Windsor he taught Thursday and Saturday at Kings College Collegiate where he was honored for his dedication in teaching Industrial Arts, which was published in the London Illustrated News. Jack was also named Teacher of the Year. Jack had a fondness for his cats, Morris, Bashful, Michelle and Curly. Jack is survived by daughter, Wendy Sharon (Phillip) Barkhouse, Amherst; sons, John Roy (Nancy), Iqualuit, Nunavut; Donald William, Amherst; Barrie James (Joanne), Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Angela, Mike, Jamie, Jennifer and Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Brittany and John. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Mildred "Mickey"
Belle Comeau; son, Ronnie. Jack's remains are resting in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, with visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral service will be in Campbell's Chapel, 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. Charitable donations in Jack's memory may be made to Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
