Kempton Hayes,
Mrs. Gilroy was a family friend but not related to the Peel family. I can
send a small copy of her studio picture as a file attachment to anyone
interested. Letter from Flem Gilroy about the Peel-Brown wedding.
CHRONICLE, wedding date June 9, 1892
A June wedding attracted a large gathering to the Methodist church Thursday
evening. The principals were James E. Peel and Miss Florence Brown. The
nuptial knot was tied by the pastor Rev. D.W. Johnson. The floral
decorations of the church were greatly admired. Miss Ina Phelan was
bridesmaid and Miss Maude Gilmore maid of honor. The groom was assisted by
his brother Mr. W. S. Peel. After the ceremony the happy couple left amid
showers of rice to take the evening train on an extended wedding trip.
Springhill, June 15, 1892
Dear James, Your kind letter of June 12th just received. Was glad to hear
that you were still living and having a pleasant time. I know Truro is at
its best now and you would enjoy it when supported by your wife. The
audience that witnessed the ceremony in the church that fatal night were
unanimous that it was the best ever held there. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson
complimented me and said it could not have been bettered.
How did you look -- why you looked fine, there was nothing awkward looking
about the affair, not a hitch. Yes we (left early) that night, we wanted to
stop in home and if we said anything about going, the rest would want to
follow so we just slipped off quietly.
What do you think of married life by this time. Bliss unalloyed I suppose. I
will look to you for some good advice and I don't want you to lie to me, if
you do I will tell your wife. I think the band is not going to the station,
but will march up to the house, I will find out about it and have things in
readiness.
Sandy and I gave you a good sendoff in the newspaper, did you see it? I saw
Ern last night, he told me about seeing you on the train. I can't get a
chance to write any more this morning as there are seventy tones a minute
coming in. So you will please excuse a short note. Please remember me to
Mrs. Peel and family and believe me as ever, Your sincere friend, Flem
Gilroy
