Obit: HAMILTON, Ethel Leona
HAMILTON, Ethel Leona - 85, Gables Lodge, Amherst, formerly of Springhill, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2002, in the lodge. Born January 24, 1917, in Maccan, she was the daughter of the late Hedley and Freda Mae (Wadman) Nelson. Moving to Springhill as a young child, Ethel spent the majority of her life in the community. She attended Springhill High School and graduated from All Saints Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. For the next 39 years, Ethel worked as a registered nurse primarily at All Saints except for a short period in Halifax, after her marriage in 1952. Ethel enjoyed her nursing career and particularly her many years of work in maternity. She was a member of St. Andrew's Wesley United Church, Springhill and prior to her move to the nursing home in 1992, she was an active member of the UCW. Ethel was past noble grand of Lady Minto Rebeccas Lodge and a member of Cobequid Chapter IODE. She was a former member of the Springhill Senior Citizens and served for a number of years as treasurer of that group. She is survived by daughter, Ann (John Keddy), Amherst; granddaughter, Erika Wood; sisters-in-law, Jean Nelson, Pugwash; Phyllis Nelson, Amherst; Alice Hamilton, Calgary; brother-in-law, Karl MacKenzie, Truro; several nieces and one nephew. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Donald Wilson Hamilton; brothers, Ross, Ray and Roy Nelson. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, in St. Andrew's Wesley United Church, Springhill, Rev. Roger Moore officiating. Burial in Mapleton Cemetery, Cumberland County. Donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated.
