1881 census CD gives his place of birth as PEI. 1861 census in Canada was
heads of households only in areas where my people lived. You might look for
him in the 1871 census in the location where he was married. There is
another young Ritchie family in the same area of PEI with a same-name baby
but I don't see a Ritchie household in 1871 Cumberland census index.
I don't know of any online index for 1861 Canada census (before
Confederation) just 1871 heads of households for Ontario and 1871-1901 names
in Cumberland County NS. There could be lists for some other regions.

Canadian and British census CDs for 1881, and USA census for 1880 among
