Roger BACON, Cumberland East MLA, announced Monday that after 34 years
of public life, he is calling it quits and won't seek re-election in the
next election.

Died - Gladys DAKEN, 79, Oxford, March 24, at home. She was born in
Wallace Bridge.
Died - Jennie Aileen Gertrude BLACK, 92, Highcrest Nursing Home,
Springhill, formerly of Oxford, March 26 at the nursing home.
Died - Nellie Cecelia JAMIESON, 71, Gulf Shore, March 23 in Colchester
Regional Hospital.

Doug DONCASTER, 40 years' service, Dean EMMERSON, 1981 fireman of the
year and Hedley STEWART, who retired after 20 years' service, were
honored by members of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies'
Auxiliary at the fire hall last Wednesday evening.

Died at his home in Linden on April 5, W. Merton WOOD, 61.
Died - Russell Edward TIBBETS, 68, West Leicester on April 5.

Effective April 1, L. William THOMPSON, who has been managing the store
of Mrs. Grace L. WOOD, Oxford, for several years, has taken over the
store and business.

Fire loss in Oxford during 1951 amounted to $12,000. Wm. VANBUSKIRK was
re-elected chief of the Oxford Fire Department.

Mrs. Hazen DIXON and Mrs. Floyd FRASER opened a bakery on Water Street,
Oxford today.

Died at Oxford March 30, Mrs. Frank E. MATTINSON, 73, a resident of
Oxford since 1912.
Died at Vancouver March 29, Owen C. THOMPSON, son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Clifford Thompson of Oxford.

Mr. Leslie S. ASBELL, Somerville, Mass., arrived in Oxford April 1 and
will take over the store formerly operated by the late A.E. SMITH.

Gasoline rationing went into effect on April 1.

Elisha MILLER was re-elected as fire chief at the annual meeting held at
the fire hall on March 27. Other officers elected were: Asst. Chief,
Bamford MILLER; Capt. of Hose, Russell DONCASTER; Capt. of Hook and
Ladder, Wm. EMBREE; Asst., Claude WOOD; sect'y-treas., Ralph
CARRUTHERS; Motor Drivers, Austin DIXON, Victor MARCHANT, Everett
DONCASTER; Mechanic, Vaughan GORDON.

Wallace River for three years, preached his farewell sermon on Sunday.

were re-elected: Chief, Ira SIMPSON; Asst., Russell DONCASTER; Capt.
Hose, Ernest MILLER; Capt. Hook and Ladder, Rufus THOMPSON; Asst.,

Died at Roslin on Easter Sunday, Miss Kate McDonald, age 80.
