I must admit that I never thought of the copyright problem this time.
Maybe if someone asks nicely, the newspaper might agree. Does anyone on
the list have any connections that they could use in our behalf?
Another possibility, if the newspaper won't agree, might be to just list
the fact and not quote the text of the newspaper. This would mean revising
what Dyan has typed so far though.
What Kathryn is contributing might be trickier because it is from current
issues that are being sold for profit. Maybe we would have to wait a
while, till the issues are no longer available for sale, and then add the
information to the web site. Just some thoughts.

Its a great idea... the material is excellent, its over halfway to being
prepared
for being on web pages in that its transcribed and I've received every
message
and have them all here available to drop on pages.
The only problem I can see might be one of copyright. I'm reasonably sure
that if I did the same thing with the Chronicle Herald material that is
posted
I would at some point hear from their lawyers. Not as likely from the
Oxford Journal but it still remains that there is a copyright issue that
may not come into play in the "sharing" on a list but moving to web
pages becomes another form of publishing that has no concern for the
fact that we are not profiting.
I regularly run into this sort of thing at the Dalhousie Medical School
where I run the web site. I know that if I ran the idea by the copyright
office I would quite assuredly be told not to proceed without signed
permission. So that's the only reason I can see why not to do it,
and its not for fear of being sued but in recognizing that there is
very likely an ownership situation just as there is with a number
of records, the facts are public but the form they take are not.
I guess the answer is still that it is a good idea and can be pursued,
I'd just have to give a second look to the permission issue...
