A Look Back ...
The final portion of the early settlements along the River Philip.
We now continue down river to the Oxford area. The first saw mill here
was built by Richard thompson, the first settler.
Other early settlers were: Joshua Reid, John Tait and Dalton Dixon. A
Methodist Church was dedicated in 1855, a Baptist meeting house in 1871,
a Presbyterian Church in 1887, and a new school in 1875. The Town of
Oxford was incorporated in 1904.
Next comes Kolbec; among the first settlers were William Rushton in
1809; John Ripley in 1805; Charles M. Moore in 1815. A post office was
established in 1873 and the first church was All Saints' Anglican,
dedicated in Nov., 1892.
The next place is Riverview, and the first grantees there included
William Vance in 1814 and John Morrison in 1818.
Next is Rockley. It derived the name from the local quarries, first
operated by Amos "King" Seaman of Minudie. Among the first grantees
were Stephen Ryder, Hezekiah and Stephen Seaman in 1810.
Now we finally come to Port Philip at the mouth of the River Philip.
Among the grantees here were Jacamiah and Stephen Seaman in 1797 and
Thomas Dickens in 1812.
The foregoing has been a very brief sketch of the area along the
winding River Philip from the Westchester Mountain to the sea at Port
Philip on the Northumberland Strait.
