It is with sadness we announce the passing of Arthur Maclean Austin, age 91, of Springhill, NS. Arthur passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
Born in Springhill, NS he was a son of the late Charles and Ethel (White) Austin.
During the Second World War he served the Merchant Marines and traveled the world. In the 30's and 40's Art was a part of the Black Diamond's baseball team in Springhill. He was an avid outdoors man who loved hunting and fishing and always looked forward to time at his camp on Poison Lake. As a young man he worked in the coal mines in Springhill; later moved to Montreal for a short time, then returned to Springhill where he served as a Police Officer for over 30 years.
He will be sadly missed by his daughter Charlene Spence (Jason), Debert, NS and granddaughter Kierstin Embree; siblings Ralph (Loraine), Cornwall, ON, Dorothy Sullivan, Victoria, BC; brother Doug (Judy), Montreal, Ken, Belleville, ON; Dave (Joan), Little Current, ON; sister-in-law Barbara Austin, Eastern Passage, NS; close family Darlene Austin Brunt (Kenny, Brianna and Nathan), Jeddore, NS, Kristine Sprayson (Jamie and Maddie), Coburg, ON; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Marion E. Barbrick; brothers Charles Munroe and Raymond Carl; sister Iris Halliday.
Arrangements have been entrusted to A H Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, NS (902-597-2361) where visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service celebrating Art's life will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 2 pm, Rev. Daniel Austin officiating. Burial will take place in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, NS immediately following the funeral.
