Jessie A. Davis
1939 - 2016

Davis, Jessie A. ­ Age 77, of Port Greville, and formerly of Diligent River
passed away peacefully with family on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the
High-Crest Nursing Home, Springhill. Born in Diligent River, she was a
daughter of the late Chapman and Florence (Read) Canning. Jessie had a long
and distinguished career of 35 years in the teaching profession. Jessie's
career began teaching primary to Grade six at the Parrsboro Roads School.
She then moved to Kentville and taught Grades 2, 3 and 4; then in Truro and
Masstown for short terms. Jessie moved back to Parrsboro in 1963 where the
bulk of her teaching was in the Elementary School at the Grade 5 and 6
levels, until her transfer to the high school in Parrsboro in 1987. Jessie
taught Grades 7-11 during her time at P.R.H.S. Upon her retirement, Jessie
moved from Diligent River to Port Greville where she became involved in the
Grace United Church. She was a member of the choir and the U.C.W. She loved
all kinds of crafts, especially the quilting bees. She was a true animal
lover and enjoyed nature to its utmost. She was at her happiest working in
her vegetable and flower gardens. She is survived by sisters, Janet Varner,
Diligent River; Marjorie Gallant, Amherst; Helen Dodsworth (John),
Chezzetcook; a brother, Laurie (Rosalie), Belmont; several nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Eileen and Doris in infancy; a
brother, Read; her partner, Rex McWhirter. Funeral service to take place at
2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Diligent River Baptist Church, Rev.
Emmanuel Mutale officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Reception to
follow at the Canning Homestead in Diligent River immediately following the
service. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer¹s Society or the
Diligent River Baptist Church.
