OBITUARY:
Hoegg, Robert Eldred - 74, Stellarton, died November 13, 1995, in the
Halifax Infirmary. Born in Stellarton, he was a son of the late Hugh and
Beatrice (Frampton) Hoegg. He began working for the Acadia Coal Company at
the age of 16, and as a young man, held the record for toms of coal produced
in the Albion Mine. He attended mining night school and advanced through
management. From 1957 - 1966, he was the underground manager of the McBean
mine in Thorburn. As a captain in the Acadia Rescue Corps, he led draeger
crews in rescue activities following the Allan Shaft, MacGregor, and
Springhill mine explosions during the 1950's, and worked in a management
capacity in the aftermath of the Springhill disaster of 1958. From 1966 -
1989, he was town engineer in Stellarton, where he worked hard to beautify
his home town. He was active in Christ Anglican Church, serving for many
years as warden and most recently as honorary warden. He was a member of
Keith Masonic and Fuller IOOF lodges. He was regularly consulted for his
expertise in coal mining, and for his knowledge of local history and
genealogy. A fine woodworker, he gave many hours of carpentry time to
friends and neighbours. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, the former Betty Dunlop; daughters, Nancy, Moncton;
Lois and husband Chesley Crosbie, St. John's, Nfld.; Judith and husband,
Peter Ryan, Halifax; brothers, John, Stellarton; R.A. (Tim),(Gladys), Truro;
sisters, Hilda, Halifax; Marguerite (Bert) Fraser; West River Station;
grandchildren, Ariana Ryan, Charlotte, Catherine, Rachel Crosbie, aunt, Mrs.
Viola Gordon, Trenton; several nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was
predeceased by a sister, Rebecca Brennan; an infant brother. Visitation 2-4,
7-9 p.m. today in H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Funeral 11 a.m.
Thursday in Christ Anglican Church. Family flowers only. Donations to
Christ Anglican Church or any charity.
