1932 - 2016 Obituary

Walter Wales Hoeg LCDR USNR of Kingston, passed away on June 24, 2016, at
the Pat Roche Hospice House, after a brief illness. Walter was born November
21, 1932, in Boston. He was the son of Harriette Frances Wales and Eric
Bruce Hoeg. He spent his childhood in Quincy, attending Quincy High School
and Thayer Academy where he played football, baseball, and wrestled NEAAU.
He attended Northeastern University from 1956 to 1967, graduating with
several degrees including an associates degree in Engineering, a BBA in
Engineering and Management, and a BS in Industrial Technology. He was the
president of the Evening Division Society for the Advancement of Management,
and was a member of Sigma Epsilon Rho and Pi Tau Kappa. Walter served his
country in both the Marine Corps and the Navy. He enlisted in the Marine
Corps in 1952 at Naval Air Station, Squantum. He graduated from Parris
Island in 1953 and served with the 4.2 Mortar Company at Camp Lejeune. He
was sent to the AAA Battalion in the Mojave Desert at 29 Palms. He was
promoted to Corporal and served as a Quad 50 Caliber Machine Gunner. He
completed his enlistment and returned to South Weymouth Naval Air Station to
serve in the Active Marine Reserve as an Aviation Ordnance Man, attaining
the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1966 he received a Direct Commission as a
Lieutenant (jg) in the Naval Reserve. He served with the SAMAR Division in
Boston and with SIMA in Newport Rhode Island. He was in the Active Naval
Reserve for 19 years. He retired from the USS Constitution in 1985, having
attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In his civilian life he was an
engineer with the Polaroid Corporation, working in Cambridge, and Norwood.
Walter was very active in his community. He was a member of the Kingston
Historical Commission for 24 years, serving as chairman, vice chairman, and
secretary. He was recognized for his efforts with the Historical Commission
by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, receiving their Preservationist of the
Year Award. He was the Fence Viewer for the Town of Kingston and also served
as the Measurer of Wood and Bark. He was most proud of his 20 years as a
volunteer High School Wrestling Coach in Rockland. He was a member of the
Marine Corps Aviation Association, the Second Marine Division Association,
the Military Officers Association of America South Shore Chapter, the Boston
Squadron MCAA, the American Society of Naval Engineers, the Old Colony
Sportsmens Association and the Norwood Sportsmens Association. He was a
Certified NRA Firearms instructor. Walter is survived by his wife of 34
years, Frances Botelho-Hoeg of Kingston; his daughter, Sydra Boyer and her
husband Richard of Manchester, Maine; his son, Stephen Wales Hoeg of
Kingston; his granddaughters, Captain Janna Hoeg of Georgia Army National
Guard, Shannon Hoeg of Weymouth and Carver, and Samantha Hoeg of Carver. He
is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Dianne Hoeg of Carver; and a dear
friend, Ms. Constance Phillips. Visiting hours for Walter will be held at
the Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 East Water Street, in Rockland, Sunday, June
26, from 2-6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 27, at 9
a.m. at Holy Family Church, 403 Union St., in Rockland. Burial with military
honors will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Tuesday, at
