MARBLEHEAD - Edward C. Carey, 97, of 46 Bubier Road, died Friday morning in Mary A. Alley Hospital following a brief illness. He was the husband of Ellen M. (Costigan) Carey.
Born in Marblehead, son of the late George and Ida (Peach) Carey, he had been a lifelong resident. He was a general contractor for more than 60 years in Marblehead, retiring in 1965.
Mr. Carey was a member of the Marblehead Lodge of Knights of Pythias for more than 50 years, a past chancellor of that lodge and a past member of the finance committee of the Grand Lodge of the Knights of Pythias. He was also a member of the Marblehead Lodge of Odd Fellows.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Roy E. Carey of Englewood, Fla., Arthur L. Graves of Columbia, S.C., and Robert G. Graves of Marblehead; two daughters, Mrs. Henry P. (Gertrude) Coplas of Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Richard M. (Elizabeth) Welch of Marblehead; two sisters, Mrs. Stephen (Alice) Fagg of Marblehead, and Mrs. John (Eunice) Annand of Randolph; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was also father of the late Edward D. Carey who died in 1979.
Funeral services will be held in the Arland A. Dirlam Chapel, Waterside Cemetery, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Arrangements under the direction of the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home.
