OBITUARY Walter Reynolds Lawson (1918-2006) Passed away peacefully at
Ste-Anne's Veterans Hospital in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec on December 10,
2006 in his eighty-ninth year. Cherished husband of Harriet Senior Lawson
who died in May of this year. Much loved father of Cecily (Graham), Geoffrey
(Julie), Tim (Julie), and Heather (John). Proud grandfather of Drummond,
Krista, Maia, Zoe, Alex, Stephanie, Claire and Fraser. Predeceased by his
sister Mary Evelyn and brothers Charles and Gerry. Walter was born in
Amherst, Nova Scotia on February 11, 1918 to Gerald Lawson and Rose Smith
Lawson. He graduated from Dalhousie University with a BSc in chemical
engineering in 1940 and immediately enlisted with the Canadian Army and was
sent overseas. He served in England, participated in the 1944 D-Day invasion
of France, fought in North Western Europe and subsequently served in the
Philippines and Okinawa. He was discharged from the Army with the rank of
major. In 1945 when the war ended, he returned to Canada and was hired as
Plant Engineer at the Toronto Works of Dominion Tar and Chemical Ltd,
beginning a long and successful career that culminated in his becoming
President of Domtar Packaging in 1977 and Executive Vice-President, Domtar
Inc in 1979. In 1946, he married Harriet Jane Senior in Toronto and together
they raised four children, moving first to Sarnia, Ontario, then Manistee,
Michigan, and settling in Montreal in 1953. In Harriet, he found a devoted
and loving mate, who supported him in his career and his many other
pursuits. When Harriet developed Alzheimers four years ago, it was Walt who
returned that support by enabling her to live at home with him until close
to the end of her life. Walt was a man who took a large bite out of life. He
loved golf, fly-fishing, shooting, skiing, sailing and tennis. He took up
wind-surfing in his 60s, in-line skating in his 70's and cycling in his
80's. Blessed with boundless energy, he had an exceptional mind and a strong
sense of duty. He and Harriet travelled extensively and didn't let the
advancing years put a stop to exploring new places. He was a commanding
presence, a wonderful story teller and an inspiration to his children and
grandchildren. Over the course of a long and full life, Walter belonged to a
number of clubs and associations. Notable among them were the Canadian
Manufacturers' Association of which he was national president in 1974-75,
the Institute of Applied Economic Research, the Board of Governors of the
Montreal General Hospital, the St. James' Club, the Montreal Indoor Tennis
Club, Sugarmill Golf and Country Club (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) and most
beloved by him, the Royal Montreal Golf Club. A memorial service will be
held on Thursday, December 21st at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Mount Royal
Funeral Complex (1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, Quebec, 514-279-6540)
preceded by a visitation beginning one hour before the service. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to the Ste-Anne's Hospital Foundation, 305
boul des Anciens Combattants, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC H9X 1Y9 or to the
Montreal General Hospital Foundation, 1650 Cedar Ave, Montreal., QC H3G 1A4.
The family wishes to thank the staff of 9A at Ste-Anne's Hospital for their
kindness and compassion.
