Crena M. Knowlton
1917-2010
If heaven has a hospital, Nurse Crena is now on duty. With a great sense of
loss and sadness, the family announces the passing of Crena May (Allen)
Knowlton, on October 17th, 2010, aged 93 years at the Orchard View Long Term
Care Facility in Gagetown, NB. ³Oromocto¹s Angel² has departed this life to
be with the Lord she served so faithfully.
Crena was the second of seven children born to the late J. Henry and M.
Maude (King) Allen on August 13th, 1917 in St. Martin¹s, NB and the wife of
the late Richard H. (Dick) Knowlton (1999). She will be greatly missed by
her only daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Rick Hilchie and was an adored
Nanny to her granddaughter and her husband, Kristen and Aaron Grim. Crena
will be missed by her brother, Ronald Allen (Vera); sisters, Lois J. Barton,
Alfreda Weston, Bernice Brown; sister-in-law, Catherine Allen (Toronto);
brother-in-law, Harold Stevens (Viola) and many nieces and nephews. Besides
her husband and parents, Crena was predeceased by her brother, Henry Jr. and
sister, Elizabeth Thomas.
Crena attended the Saint John School for Nurses, graduating in 1941. She
worked at the Saint John General Hospital and for a short time in Montréal.
After marrying in 1956, Crena did not return to nursing until the late 1960s
when she worked at the Oromocto Public Hospital until her retirement in
1982. She then began her long span as a volunteer with numerous
organizations in Oromocto. People in the community and the surrounding areas
will recall Crena assisting at VON Foot and Blood Pressure Clinics; her
involvement with CanSurmount, OPH Auxiliary, St. John¹s Anglican Church;
selling flowers and tickets for various causes and producing ³Crena¹s
Fruitcakes² at Christmas. Whatever task was set before her, Crena took
charge and tackled it with gusto. She was a good friend and caregiver to
many people, never wanting to be acknowledged for her kind deeds and
actions. In 2002, she was nominated and received the Queen¹s Jubilee Medal
for Volunteering.
The family extends grateful thanks to people who were constant friends and
all who assisted with Crena over the past years Drs. V. S. Roxborough, F.
Rupa, H. Stairs; the wonderful caring staff of Orchard View Nursing Home;
the WeCare girls and the neighbors who kept an eye on Crena before her move
to Orchard View (Oct. 16, 2009), and a very special thanks to her buddies
(Georgie, Keith and Alyre) who were a great source of companionship and
camaraderie.
Visitation will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home on Tuesday, October
19th, 2010 from 3-7 pm. A funeral service will be held at the St. John's
Anglican Church, Oromocto, NB on Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
with a reception immediately following in the church hall. Canon Jim Irvine
will be officiating. Visitation will be held at Brenan¹s Funeral Home, 111
Paradise Row, Saint John that evening from 7-9 pm. Interment will be held
in the Ocean View Memorial Gardens, Saint John, NB on Thursday, October
21st, 2010 at 1:00 pm with Fr. Stuart Allan officiating. For those who wish,
donations in memory of Crena may be made to the Oromocto Public Hospital
Foundation, the Alzheimer¹s Society or to the charity of the donor¹s choice.
