OBITUARY: Vernon Leroy Hughes
Port Greville, July 4 - The community was deeply shocked by the sudden death of Vernon Leroy, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hughes, Fox River, N.S. Roy observed his 9th birthday on May 27 and was honored for making the highest average in his classroom at the closing of the school term. He was a regular attendant at the United Church Sunday School and will be greatly missed by his teacher and classmates. He suffered an accident while riding on his bicycle Thursday afternoon, losing control of it, as it hit some loose gravel. He was picked up and carried to a house by his chum, Porter Graham, who was with him at the time of the accident. Medical aid was summoned, Dr. David Kernahan of Parrsboro, being in attendance, but his condition became worse early Saturday morning, and he passed away enroute to All Saint's Hospital, Springhill. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, June 30, from Grace United Church, Rev. T.S. Cresp, conducting the services, assisted by Rev. MacDonald, of the United Church and Rev. Willard Smith, of the United Baptist Church, both of Parrsboro. Hymns sung were: "Jesus Loves Me" and "The Lord's My Shepherd". Pallbearers were Stewart McCulley, Hance Graham, Clayton Parsons and Gerald Hatfield. Interment was made in the United Church Cemetery. The long funeral cortege and beautiful floral offerings showed the esteem in which this young lad was had.

Note: "Leroy" is as published, possible misprint for Roy?
