Title: Re: [nscumber] John Maynard Varner of Glasgow Mountain
Jim::
I have a “separation” between Ralph and Margaret about 1956 which is not a divorce. It’s possible Sonny and Margaret were only living common law sometime after 1956 and up to 1966 when Margaret died in All Saint’s Hospital. Her obit was written as Winters so she hadn’t legally remarried. There were no “Varner” children referenced in Margaret’s obit though.
I have no birth dates yet for Ralph and Margaret’s children, Ralph Jr., Billie or Laurenda but the others were all born between about 1943 and 17 Nov 1956. The School Grading Lists published in the Springhill Record each year was a help with many of the ages.
Ralph and Margaret had DeWenton Hill Winters (b.1956-d.1957) but that doesn’t mean Ralph and Margaret were still together as a couple once she became pregnant with DeWenton.
I have 5 of the 7 “Varner” children born between 1959 and 1963 [2 were twins] with no dates for the 2 who died in infancy.
Many never obtained divorces and remarriages before living with someone else = common law. Many never obtained a divorce but remarried anyway by fibbing the facts = bigamy and most got away with it. Bigamy today is much harder to get away with with better record keeping. Common law and Bigamy are not new terminologies.
In the next couple of years, the N.S.Vitals should have a 1940’s marriage date/location and a 1966 death record for Margaret. Hopefully something new will surface.

The 1956 wedding doesn't fit well as there was a child listed in the
Winter family born in 1956? Is there a better date for them? Thanks.
