I’m thinking possibly William Gordon Canning of the Newfoundland Cannings in Springhill.

Gordon is living in Leamington in both his parent’s obits; Shirley is being buried in Leamington Cemetery.

Barbara Jean Smith 1934-2012
SMITH (Canning) Barbara Jean, 77 of Springhill, surrounded by her loved ones, went home to be with the Lord on April 21, 2012.  Born in Leamington, NS, she was a daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Brace) Canning. Barb was a dedicated wife and mother who loved spending time with her grandchildren.  Her greatest joy was time spent in the sugar woods where she loved to share a tea biscuit with her family and friends.  Barb was an active member of the Springhill UCW and taught Sunday School for many years.  She enjoyed square dancing as a member of the Cumberland Twirlers. Barb is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Glen; daughters, Terri Billard, Halifax and Kathryn (Jeff) Stubbert, Sackville, NB; son Craig (Paula), St. Andrews, NB, sisters Bessie (Harold) Henwood and Bonnie (Carson) Smith; brothers Gordon (Shirley) Canning and Teddy (Mary) Canning, all of Springhill and seven grandchildren.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Ruth (Victor) Millard, and brother Georgie. Arrangements are being handled under the care and supervision of A.H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill (902-597-2361) from where visitation will be held on Monday, April 23, 2012 from 6-9 pm.  A funeral service will be held from the funeral home at 2 pm on Tuesday, April 24.  Rev. Wayne McCarther officiating.  Burial will follow in the Rodney Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Barb's memory may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation, Kidney Foundation or the Springhill United Church. www.brownsfuneralhome.com

MILLARD, Ruth Pearl - 76, High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2005, in the home. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Brace) Canning. She was a music lover. She enjoyed singing, cooking, writing poems and her family. She is survived by sons, Stephen Millard, Leamington; Wayne (Marlene) Millard, Mapleton; Fred O'Hanley, Ontario; Jody Cormier, Alberta; daughters, Dale (Leo) MacArthur, River Phillip; Paulette Terris, Springhill; brothers, Gordon (Shirley) Canning and Ted (Mary) Canning, both of Leamington; sisters, Bessie (Harold) Henwood, Barbara (Glen) Smith, both of Springhill, and Bonnie (Carson) Smith, Leamington; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Warren Victor Millard, and her brother, George in infancy. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, with Rev. Danny Compton officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill. Shirley Georgina Canning
 
1929-2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Georgina
Canning, age 86, of Springhill, NS. Shirley passed away peacefully with her
family by her side at the High-Crest Nursing Home in Springhill, NS on
Friday January 29, 2016.
 
Born in Springhill on April 12, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Arthur
and Aveleen (Mitchell) Marshall.
 
Shirley was educated in the Springhill schools. She married the love of her
life, Gordon Canning, on June 4, 1949. After raising her three children, she
went to work for several years at the Wardrobes Drug Store, until it's
closure. She was then employed by The Record until her retirement in 1987.
She enjoyed gardening, baking, dancing, sewing, and rug hooking. Shirley
cherished her time at the cottage at Linden Beach and was especially happy
hosting family celebrations there over the years.

Shirley will be sadly missed by her husband, Gordon, Springhill; sons, Allan
(Florence), Springhill, and Cleve (Gale), New Glasgow, NS; daughter, Linda
(Doug) Stockall, Moncton, NB; seven grandchildren, Jerry (Melissa), Jason
(Amanda), Tim (Beth), Katrina, Trevor (Keri), Stuart (Katrina), and Allison
(Daniel); three great grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister
Ardythe (Late George) Tabor, Springhill, and many nieces and nephews.
 
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Margaret (Late
Floyd) Smith, and brother John (Helen) Marshall.
 
Arrangements have been entrusted to A.H. Brown funeral Home, 5 McFarlane
Street, Springhill (902-597-2361) from where visiting hours will take place
2-4 and 6-8 pm on Monday, February 1, 2016. A funeral service will be held
at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 2:30 pm. The Rev. Wayne
McCarther officiating. Burial will take place in the Leamington Cemetery in
the Spring.
 
Shirley's family wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Gables
Lodge, Amherst and High-Crest Nursing Home, for the quality care and
compassion she received during the last five months.
 
Those wishing to make a donation in Shirley's memory may do so to the
Alzheimer's Society, or the charity of one's choice.
