Floyd A. Beckwith, 77
GORHAM -- Floyd A. Beckwith, 77, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at the Gorham House, after a courageous seven year battle with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). Floyd was born in Portland on March 7, 1936, to Archie L. and May E. Beckwith. He graduated from Portland High School in 1954. Floyd began his career in banking at the age of 16, working for the National Bank of Commerce. By the age of 24 he was a head teller, and by his early 30s he was promoted to assistant manager, and completed his banking career as a Branch Manager and Vice President of Maine National Bank in South Portland. He retired in 1988 after 36 years. In 1958, after the National Bank of Commerce merged with Maine National Bank, Floyd met the love of his life, Helen Corinne Noyes. They married Feb. 7, 1959. They shared 47 years together before Helen passed away in 2006. Floyd and Helen had two daughters, Lori and Sue. They were always the light of his life and he always spoke fondly of them as 'my girls.' He also enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren, Christine and Jimmy. Floyd (aka 'Becky') found a passion for Candlepin bowling in his early 20s. For eight years he bowled professionally with the Maine State Bowling Association. He was a regular on WGAN Channel 13's Saturday Candlepin Bowling Show, where he once won nine weeks in a row. He was the Western Maine Champion in 1962. He and Helen also spent many years bowling in a couple's league at the Bowl-A-Rama in South Portland. In his early 30s he found another passion, golf, which he was taught by his father. He was a member of both the Willowdale Golf Club and the Purpoodock Golf Club. On Aug. 1, 1970, he got his first hole in one at Purpoodock. On July 13, 1986, he achieved his second hole in one at Willowdale. After his retirement, he and Helen spent their winters in Florida where he was able to golf year round. Floyd was one of two remaining charter members of the Thornton Heights Lions Club. The club just celebrated their 44th anniversary. He was King Lion in 1975-1976 and treasurer on and off for many years. In 2007, he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship in recognition of Humanitarian work. Floyd served in the Maine Army National Guard for six years. He was a member of the Spring Point Festival Committee, South Portland Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees, the Woodfords Club, and the Hiram Lodge #180. He volunteered with the local Alzheimer's Association and the American Lung Association. In 1970, he was a Loaned Executive for the United Fund, now known as the United Way of Greater Portland. Floyd was predeceased by his wife Helen; grandson Eric Dubois; and sister Myra Jean Beckwith Hatch and her husband Billy. He is survived by his daughter Loretta M. Beckwith Dubois, daughter Sue E. Mastrian and her husband Jay; grandson Jimmy Mastrian, granddaughter Christine Mastrian Hill and her husband Matt; sister Claudia Beckwith Jalbert and her husband Herman, brother Clifford Beckwith and his wife Barbara; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Gorham House, also the Solamer Hospice House in Scarborough and the Home Instead especially Michele for all their special care and support. Visiting hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a service at 1 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
