Eric:

Take a look see on the split view of the 1911 Port Greville Census. The writing is very faint.

Daniel Johnstone, gson, Apr 1896
Thomas Johnstone, gson, Mar 1898
?             Johnstone, gdau, Jan 1899
?              Johnstone, gdau, May 1900
Mabel Johnstone, gdau, Jan 1902
?          Johnstone, gson, Mar 1909

Where’s
Kathleen S., born 12 Jul 1902
Agnes Mae, born 1 Sep 1905
Muriel Jean, born 8 Jan 1908

As you say, “

Also, I note that on Mabel Isabella's 1936 birth registration it says that Bessie had 6 live births and that 5 children were still living.  However, we've identified 7 children (ignoring Rachel? and Carrie from 1911 census) and we know that two - Duncan, Jr and Kathleen - are dead before 1936.

Question:  In 1968 - on her birth registration - did Muriel Jean (Johnstone) Field lie about being 66 and opted for 60 instead so that she could collect CPP which started  4 years earlier?

However, Muriel Jean's school records "reveal" that she was 5y 5m 5d old when starting Primary in on 1 August 1913.  This calculates a birth date of 27 February 1908 (two days before the one she said was her younger sister's).

The confusion compounds at an alarming rate...

Hi Eric:

Thanks. I forgot to look at page 2.

Also, in 1936, it states BOTH parents are dead. Their father did die 15 Oct 1935 BUT their mother didn’t die until 10 May 1959.

If Muriel had said she was a sister six years “junior”, it all would add up.

Possibly the only way to solve this is to research the Advocate School Records for Mabel Isabel and find out what year she was in Primary or Grade  One.

Dave/Penny:

On the second page of Mabel Isabelle's NB birth registration, Muriel says that she (Muriel) is "a sister six years senior".  In the March 1936 registration she says that "the other children are younger than myself".  This makes me question where she believes Thomas might be?

Also, Muriel says that Mabel would be "28 this year".

Re: [nscumber] Mabel Isabella (Johnstone) Hamilton of Apple River

Thanks Deb.

I’ll add this additional document to Mabel Isabel (Johnstone) Hamilton’s file notes.

Her sister, Muriel Jean (Johnstone) Field, born 8 Jan 1908 in Advocate has a 25 Mar 1968 delayed registered birth application attested to by brother, Thomas  A. Johnstone that he was age 10 when Muriel Jean was born.

Muriel Jean was the attestee on her sister, Mabel Isabel Johnstone’s 24 Apr 1936 N.B. delayed registered birth application saying Muriel was born  29 Feb 1908.

There’s only 2 months between the two sister’s delayed registered births so one of the applications has to have been entered in error. Muriel is the correct age on the 1921 census; can’t locate Mabel in 1921.

It’s possibly a case of no “due diligence” on the N.B. government’s part and Mabel lost out on about 7 years of her life had she lived to pensionable age. One of those cases whereby we’ll never know her exact birth date.

Per Mable’s application, Bessie Ellen Grant had 6 children with 5 still living. Pte. Daniel Dunbar Johnstone was KIA, 2 Sep 1918, Europe. I have Bessie born Fraserville not Parrsboro.

Where Mabel is on the 1901 Cumberland census, I still tend to believe her birth was about 29 Feb 1901 at either Eatonville or New Salem unless the 1901 Mabel died and the parents recycled the name for the 1908 Mabel.
