ALBANS, VT-- Barbara Jean Smith, 74, lived with her son, Wayne, and daughter-in-law, Jodi, in St. Albans, VT, while battling late-stage ALS since May 2011. She passed into the next world Monday, December 12, 2011, at 7:00 pm in her son's home. Born in Wellesley, MS, on April 24, 1936, she was raised up in Reading, MS, with her two brothers, Graham and Bob, and her younger sister, Elaine. She was the daughter of the late Hamilton H. and Ethel R. Gaw.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Harmon of Spartanburg, SC; her seven children: son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Jodi Smith of St. Albans, VT, daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Donnie Dobson of Inman, SC, daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Charles Ridings of Campobello, SC, son, Scott Smith of Spartanburg, SC, son, Stephen Smith of Spartanburg, SC, son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Misty Smith of Cowpens, SC, and son, Paul Smith of Spartanburg, SC. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In honoring her request, there will be no visitation or funeral service until the early summer in Seabrook, NH, where her ashes will be scattered at sea.
