     WINDHAM -- Carol Lea Saunders, 60, wife of Alan R. Saunders Sr. died surrounded by loved ones, after a long illness at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough March 21, 2008.
     She was born Nov. 18, 1947, in Boothbay Harbor, the daughter of Carroll L. and Marjorie Hatfield Stevens. Carol Lea was a 1966 graduate of Westbrook High School. She worked as a Juvenile Corrections Officer at the Long Creek Youth Development Center (formerly Maine Youth Center) for 21 years until she retired in 2006 due to her medical disability.
     Carol married her husband, Alan on Aug. 24, 1974. While at Long Creek Youth Development Center, Carol was considered a role model by the young girls that she supervised. Among her co-workers, she was considered a true friend and was loved. She will be truly missed by all. After her retirement in 2006, her many friends at Long Creek Youth Development Center held a surprise bridal shower for the upcoming renewal of marriage vows with her husband Alan, to celebrate 32 years together. Carol Lea had an outgoing personality and loved to plan parties for her friends and family. Last year she and her friend, Nicola Cox held a surprise party at the Italian Heritage Club for her husband's retirement from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. Carol surprised Al by telling him they were going to Casino Night.
     Carol's passion was playing poker with her sister Sonia, and her friends, Hope, Jane, Tonya, and Julie. She enjoyed frequent trips to casinos and the Caribbean.
     Carol Lea was predeceased by both parents; her son, Jeffrey Gilman, and daughter, Erica Saunders. Besides her husband Al, survivors include three children, Beth Ann Gilman of Westbrook, Alan R. Rick Saunders Jr. of Windham, stepson, Michael Saunders of New Jersey; five grandchildren, Robert, Dereck, Tyler, Brenden and Alex; siblings, Glynford Stevens and his wife Sharon of Eddington, Geraldine Brosnihan of Old Orchard Beach, Sonia Smith and her husband Michael of Raymond, Frank Stevens and his wife Ruth Morrison of Poland, Gary Stevens and his wife Kimberly of Windham; sisters-in-law, Debra O'Brien of Windham, Sandra Milligan and her husband Jay of Windham, brother-in-law, Douglas S. Saunders and his wife Julie of Windham; and many nieces and nephews.
     There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, North Gorham Road, Windham with the Rev. Susan Murphy officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Mayberry Cemetery, Windham. Arrangements by Dolby Funeral Chapel.
