Re: Obit: SPICER, Ona Maude [nee BIGELOW] - a link to Pa_ rrsboro

Dave,

Your speculation that Ona Maude Bigelow's husband, Lawrence Edward "Mike" Spicer might trace back to the Parrsboro Shore seems to be correct.  Here's the trail:

Her husband:
Lawrence Edward "Mike" Spicer, born 1915 in Canning, Kings Co., died 30-Mar-1988 in Kentville, Kings Co.

His obituary from the March 31, 1988 Halifax Chronicle Herald:
SPICER, Lawrence Edward (Mike) - 73, Canning, died Wednesday in Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital, Kentville.  Born in Canning, he was a son of the late Lee and Lydia (Bennett) Spicer.  He was a member of Canning United Church and, for 35 years, of Canning Volunteer Fire Dept.  He had been employed with Spicer Fina Service Station for 23 years,  He also worked with the N.S. Liquor Commission in Kentville, retiring in 1980.  He is survived by his wife, the former Ona Bigelow; two daughters, Mary Lee (Mrs. Corey O'Dell), Centreville; Lydia (Mrs. Carman O'Dell), Hantsport; and a grandson.  He was predeceased by three sisters, Marion, Vera and Helen, and a brother, Ralph.  The body is in W.C. Hiltz Funeral Home, Canning.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Canning United Baptist Church, Rev. Neil Price officiating, assisted by Licentiate Joyce Churchill.  Burial will be in Habitant Cemetery, Habitant, Kings County.  Donations may be made to the N.S. Kidney Foundation or any charity.

Mike's parents:
Aldon "Lee" Spicer, born 20-Jul-1869 in Cornwallis, died 11-Apr-1941 in Canning
married on 01-Feb-1899 in Hantsport to
Lydia May Bennett, born April 1879

Lee's NS birth registration says his parents were married in Parrsboro:
Alden Lee Spicer, b 20-Jul-1869 in Cornwallis, s/o Joseph Spicer (b Cornwallis) & (Anna?) Augusta (Lank?) - they married 26-Mar-1851 in Parrsboro.

Lee's NS death registration says his father was born at Spencers Island:
Leander Aldon Spicer, born Aug 4, 1868 in Nova Scotia, s/o Joseph Spicer (born Spencers Island) & Amy (Lank?) (born Eastport, Campebello, NB), died 1941 in Canning, Kings Co. aged 72yr/8mo/7days and was buried in Habitant.  The informant was his son, Ralph B. Spicer.

Here are several census entries showing Aldon Lee Spicer:
1881 - Lakeville, Kings Co., NS
  Joseph Spicer (50) b NS
  Amy A Spicer (42) b USA
  John Spicer (16) b NS
  Alfretta Spicer (19) b NS
  James E. Spicer (14) b NS
Aldon Lee Spicer (11) b NS
  George S. Spicer (8) b NS
1901 - Canning, Kings Co., NS
  Lee Spicer (31) b Aug 10, 1870
  Lydia Spicer (21) b May 12, 1880
  Marion Spicer (1) b Mar 1, 1900
1911 - Canning, Kings Co., NS
  Leander Spicer (42) b Aug 1879 (sic)
  Lydia May Spicer (32) b Apr 1879
  Marian E. Spicer (10) b Apr 1901
  Ralph B. Spicer (7) b Jun 1904
1921- Canning, Kings Co., NS
  Lee Spicer (52)
  Lydia Spicer (42)
  Ralph Spicer (10)
  Lawrence Spicer (4)
  Hellen Spicer (8)
  Vera Spicer (6)

A second marriage for Lee's father appears to confirm a Cumberland Co. connection:
Joseph Spicer, 63, widower, ship carpenter, res of Canada Creek, born in Cumberland, s/o Joseph & Alice, was married on Dec 6, 1890 in Canada Creek to Mary A. Gould, 43, widow, res of Sheffields Mills, born in Sheffields Mills, d/o Joseph & Marg't.

Thanks Gerry.

Many of the Spicer’s trace back to the Parrsboro Shore, thus my reason to post this one.

Everyone gained a bit on this one.
