Mrs. Buckman earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in home economics
at the University of Washington. While teaching at the University of
Minnesota, she met her husband, Dr. Stanley Buckman.
The couple moved to Memphis in the 1940s, where they founded the industrial
chemical company Buckman Laboratories, now Bulab Holdings Inc.
During more than 50 years in Memphis, New Hampshire-born Mertie Buckman gave
her heart to numerous local institutions and then gave millions of dollars
to their causes, setting new standards for philanthropy.
At Rhodes College, where she served as a trustee, Mrs. Buckman donated $ 3
million in 1987 to endow an international internship program. And she made
the lead gift for Buckman Hall, a $ 9 million project completed with gifts
from her family and other supporters.
Mrs. Buckman made the largest single gift in the history of Christian
Brothers schools worldwide when she gave the local university $ 3 million -
$ 2.5 million for high-tech Buckman Hall, which houses the School of
Business, and $ 500,000 for campus beautification.
