GILLIS, Ronald Edward - 76, Amherst, died Friday, June 21, 2002, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII . Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Harold and Christina (Moore) Gillis. Ron was a veteran of the Second World War, where he served in the Royal Canadian Navy and the Air Force for eight years. He retired from Canada Post Corporation in 1985, after 31 years of service, first as a letter carrier, later as an inside worker and retiring as postal supervisor. Ron was a member of Amherst Town Council for six years, three of which he served as Deputy Mayor. He was a founder of the Amherst Citizens Committee and was one of the first members chosen by the Town Council to represent council on the First Police Commission in Amherst. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion and served as president both at the Amherst Branch 10 and the Montaque, P.E.I. Branch. Ron was a member of the Amherst District Labour Council. He retired to Montaque, P.E.I., but returned to Amherst, after the death of his second wife, Audrey. He was a member of AA for 40 years, having founded the Sunday Morning AA Group. Ron is survived by his wife, the former Norma LeBlanc; daughters, Heather Tower and Cathy Lutz, both of Edmonton, Alta.; Holly Gould, Sheila Burke (David) and Sherry Ripley, all of Amherst; Carole Gray (Rodney), Hastings; sons, Colin, Toronto; Neil, Moncton, N.B.; Roderick, Edmonton; Keith, Halifax; 10 stepchildren; sisters, Margarite Richards, Montaque, P.E.I.; Marie Elduayen, Toronto; Doris Harrison, Amherst; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his second wife, the former Audrey McAloney; brothers, Joseph, Arnold; stepdaughter, Linda Baker. His remains are resting in Campbells Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, with visiting 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 holding their service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity St. Stephen's United Church, Amherst, Rev. Danny Compton officiating. Interment will take place in Amherst Cemetery. Donations in Ron's memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Highland View Regional Hospital Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or QEII Hospitals, Halifax. It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Janice Gayle Gillis,
age 77 of Amherst, formerly of Joggins announce her passing on January 12,
2015 with her loving family at her side. Born in Joggins, she the daughter
of the late Emma Agnes Edwards.

Janice worked at Northern Telecom for many years. She was a member of Holy
Family Parish, Amherst. As a pastime she thoroughly enjoyed playing crib,
bingo as well as doing puzzles.

She leaves to mourn her ten children, sons: Colin of Richmond Hill, ON, Neil
of Moncton, NB, Roddy of Edmonton, AB, Keith of Halifax, NS; daughters,
Heather (John) Tower of Edmonton, AB, Holly (Brad) Gould of Amherst, NS,
Cathy (Pete) Gillis of Calgary, AB, Sheila (David) Burke of Amherst, NS,
Sherry (Joe) Ripley of Amherst, Carole (Jody) McKiel of Amherst, NS;
sisters, Betty Vautour, Riverview, NB, Donna Bristol of Amherst, NS;
brothers, Sonny Edwards of Montreal, PQ, Al Edwards of Owen Sound, ON; aunt,
Elaine Davies of Montreal, PQ, Lionel Edwards of Joggins, NS; sixteen
grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her mother, she was predeceased by her brothers, Doug Edwards &
Donald Edwards.

Arrangements are under the care and supervision of Furlong~Jones Funeral
Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777). Honoring Janice's request,
cremation has taken place and there is to be no visitation or funeral
service. There will be a graveside committal service at a later date.
