A group of Pugwash area residents met at the Pugwash Village
Commission Hall on September 29 to form an environmental action
group, the "Friends of the Pugwash Estuary."
The expansion and renovation at the Wallace Area Museum is well
underway. An official sod-turning ceremony was held at the museum
on October 2.
Died - Janet ALLEN, 78, Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, formerly of
Port Howe, September 27, in Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital.
Died - Lillian M.E. SMITH, 88, Linden, October 2, at home.
Died - Shirley Gwendolyn ATKINSON, 68 of Pugwash, October 4 in the
North Cumberland Memorial Hospital.

Wednesday, October 12, 1994.
John BRAGG, president of Oxford Frozen Foods, became the first
ever recipient of Master Entrepreneur award and John CARABERIS,
owner of seagull Pewter and Silversmiths, Pugwash, won in the
Socially Responsible Entrepreneur category during a recent
provincial entrepreneur of the year award ceremony in Halifax.
An agreement between the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and
members of the Millbrook First Nations will see the establishment
of a salmon food fishery on the lower River Philip this fall.
The River Philip United Church, built in 1861, has been declared a
heritage property.
Oxford barber, Harry FOWLER, 82, died Oct. 9, after 59 years in
business.

Died - Andrew David Alexander ROSS, 9, Pugwash Junction, October
3.
Died - David Austin OUDERKIRK, 39, Middleboro, October 4.

The new winery of Hans JOST at Malagash is going into production
this fall. The vineyard covers 13 acres on his farm.
Cumberland West Conservative MLA, George HENLEY, senior advisor to
the cabinet and former Minister of Lands and Forests, has
announced his retirement from politics after 21 years in office.
Victor MARCHANT, former published of The Oxford Journal, was
presented with an honorary Atlantic Community Newspapers
Association life Membership at the ACNA Convention at Mill River,
PEI, September 28.
Died - Charles Malcolm BLAIR, 78, Oxford Junction, September 24.
Died - Mrs. Jessie Rebecca (MacPhee) WILSON, 85, of Malagash,
October 1.

Thursday, October 3, 1974.
The new bridge over Little River on Lower Main St. is progressing
well and should be open within a few weeks.
Died - Mrs. Laura PAULEY, Pugwash, 93, September 28.
Died - Mrs. John CHROBAK, 78, at her home in Wallace River on
September 24.

Thursday, October 1, 1964.
The three small sons of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey CUNNINGHAM of
Woodstock, N.B were rescued from the waters of the Northumberland
Strait by Roland RAFUSE and Gordon SMITH after being swept out to
sea in a small dorey by a sudden offshore dale.

Sherman CUTHBERTSON of Moncton, a native of Roslin, is Grand
Chancellor of K of P Lodges in the Maritimes.
Karl GATCHELL has opened his new service station at West Pugwash.
Board of Trade and people along the Sunrise Trail are protesting
the application of Acadian Coach Lines to discontinue their bus
service between New Glasgow and Amherst.
Died - At Pound Ridge, N.Y. O.K. ROGERS, 54, formerly of Port
Howe and Oxford.
Seventy Years Ago
Thursday, September 28, 1944
Salt structures, a continuation of the Malagash belt, have also
been found north of Oxford along Little River.
Messrs. Kenneth GORDON and Guy LOCKHART have been erecting their
new greenhouse on the latter's property by Salt Lake. It is
expected the large structure will be completed before the cold
weather sets in.
Died - In active service in Italy on September 9, Private Owen
Wilmot ADAMS, Westchester, age 23.
Died - At Oxford on September 24, Clifford S. CHAPMAN, 75,
resident of Oxford for several years and a native of Middleboro.
Died - At Truro on September 18, Clarence WEEKS, 61, Thomson
Station.
