Oxford incumbent mayor, Frances (Mac) McCONAGHY is reoffering for another term as mayor and is being challenged by Alfred (Alfie) KING in the October 15 municipal election.

The fishermen's wharf, Pugwash, is undergoing repairs.  The old decking and stringers will be replaced with concrete decking.  Some new piles are being installed to replace old ones.

Mansour's Men's Wear, Amherst, is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

Tenders have been called to demolish about 12 buildings on the former Amherst Aerospace site.

Died - Christena Grace LLOY, 88, East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, formerly of Collingwood, September 14.
Died - Myrtle Florence SMITH, 96, East Amherst, born in Oxford, September 17.

Wednesday, September 12, 1984.

Cumberland County Councillor Ira DRYSDALE, a resident of Wallace, has gained the support of council in urging the Canadian government to use Wallace sandstone in the construction of the new National Art Gallery in Ottawa.

A host of government officials, including Social Services Minister Edmund MORRIS, attended Thursday afternoon's dedication ceremony and official opening of the Kevin Henley Pavilion/Activity Area at Sunset ARC.  The family of the late Kevin HENLEY attended the ceremony, with his father, George Henley, MLA, performing the unveiling honours.

Died - George Edward TERRIS, 76, of Kolbec, on September 3.
Died - Racel (Frenchie) POULIN, 64, of Oxford, formerly of Dartmouth, on September 8.

Forty Years Ago
September 12, 1974.

Over 1,100,000 pounds of frozen blueberries from Christy Crops Ltd. were loaded this month aboard the E.M. Eskimo at Parrsboro for shipment to Rotterdam and Copenhagen.

Work is underway on a new bridge over Little River on Lower Main Street, Oxford.  Last week the Department of Highways toppled the old single-lane bridge into the river.  The new bridge will be 24 feet wide, permitting two-lane traffic.

Died - On September 6, Wesley Otis SMITH, 76, of Wentworth Centre.
Died - On August 29, Aubrey L. FITZGERALD, 80, of Springhill, formerly of Port Howe.

A barn owned by Robert REID, Little River, was completely destroyed by fire on September 7.

Died - At Oxford on September 6, Dr. Afred Cyril BEATTY, age 45.
Died - At Springhill on August 30, Mrs. Wilfred WEBB of Little River, age 76.
Died - At Springhill on August 21, George Chisholm HOWARD of Wallace Bridge, age 76.
Died - At Tatamagouche on August 22, Herbert Joseph PURDY of Malagash, age 78.

Oxford Town Council discussed the building of a new municipal building for a fire hall, town jail and town office.

After many weeks of preparation, the Wallace North Shore Horsemen have completed the new Seaside raceway at North Wallace, which opens on September 11.

Died - At Oxford on August 29, Mrs. Mary Susan FRASER, 74.
Died - At Little River on August 31, Mrs. Charles DOBSON.

Seventy Years Ago
Thursday, September 7, 1944.

The Oxford bakery, located in the K of P Hall on Water St., with N.P. CHRISTENSEN as manager, has moved to larger quarters in the Dufferin Hotel.

Died - At Oxford on September 5, C.E. HOWARD, well-known teacher, age 55.

FLINN, Philip Michael, 75, Halifax, passed away September 12, 2014.  Born in Halifax, on 13 December 1938, son of the late R. Jeffrey QC and Agatha (Connors) Flinn.  Survived by his wife Carol (Armstrong), daughter Deanna (Steve Connors), sons Tom (Nicole Deveau), Craig (Mary Jo) and Derrick (Estee).  Brother Jeffrey, (London, Ontario), sisters Jean Coyle, Monica McDonald and Peggy Dursi.  Predeceased by brothers Donald, Ted, Jim and sister Betty Cleary.  (Obit has photo)

WILLIAMS, David Wayne, 70, Gulf Shore, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014.  Son of the late Raymond and Viola (Adshade) Williams.  Surviving are his wife, Marion (Borden) Williams; sons, Terry (Cathy), Kenneth (Lorie), all of Lower Sackville.  Sisters, Beverly Fraser, Cherry Brook, PEI; Darlene (Dale) Patriquin, Greenville.  Predeceased by two infant brothers.  (Obit has photo)
