Claude Dewolfe Smith
Lieu de naissance : Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Lieu de décès : Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 21 décembre 2009
CENTRAL WEST RIVER – Claude Dewolfe Smith of Central West River, NS has passed away.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late William Otto and Catherine (Cunningham) Smith.
Surviving him are his three children: (Bill) William Paul (Carol) Smith, Newmarket, ON; Holly Ellen (Royce) Harris, Pine Tree, NS; and Joel Vincent (Kristine) Smith, Oakville, ON. Also surviving him are his six grandchildren: Robyn, Jeffrey, Jeremy, Megan, Jordan and Courtney, as well as his great-granddaughter, Sydney.
He was predeceased by brothers, Arthur and Asa Smith both of New Glasgow, NS; Lloyd Smith, Hamilton, ON; and Lewis Smith, Ottawa, ON. Surviving him is his brother, Elliott Smith, New Victoria, NS; and his sisters, Helen Casagrande, Fairhaven, NJ; and Ola Plante, New Glasgow, NS.
Born in New Glasgow on December 13, 1920; Claude was a lifelong resident of Pictou County. As a young man he worked for Eastern Woodworkers, and then the Eastern Car Company - later becoming a self-employed carpenter. He quickly earned an excellent reputation in the trade, and had worked on, or over-seen the construction of many homes in the local area.
Claude died Sunday morning - December 21, 2008, having suffered a heart attack. He was fortunate in that he lived in his own home, had been in good health, and still drove his own vehicle. He enjoyed a quiet, peaceful, country life. An early riser, Claude always made sure the bird-feeders were full, and the cats had a meal in their dishes, before checking off the current day on the calendar, and sitting down to his own breakfast. Puttering around the yard and in the garage was probably his most favorite pass-time on a sunny day. Later, he might decide to take a run in town for some grocery items, or enjoy the comfort of curling up on the couch for an afternoon nap. He had a simple well-worn routine that carried him through to the ripe old age of 88. Claude lived as he wanted to live, and although there is no convenient time to die – to die with his boots on would have been his choice. He was compassionate, funny, honest and hard working - a good man who is greatly missed, and fondly remembered by family and friends.
Cremation has taken place, and his family has received his ashes. At Claude’s request there has been no funeral service. Donations in his memory may be made to either the SPCA, or Summer Street Industries.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to neighbor Harlen Cameron who has been a true and loyal friend to Claude over the years, and who has in a large part helped to make it possible for him to enjoy the comfort of his own home until his passing. Thank you Harlen - your kindness will always be remembered.

In recent months, Jessie expressed her wishes as to exactly what she wanted
included in this writing; so it is with this in mind that we offer you the
following thoughts.
She wanted her deepest gratitude expressed to family and friends who have
been such a blessing. You helped her to create a very rich and meaningful
life, simply by including her so generously in yours.
Thank you for all the times you invited her to run errands with you, or do
the Saturday morning yard sale circuit. Thank you for the times you asked
her to be your co-pilot as you maneuvered the streets around town... or for
the times you spent relaxing on the veranda with her, talking about
everything under the sun. Thank you for making her laugh. Thank you for
afternoons spent at the cottage together... and for all the great phone
conversations. Thank you for sharing her love of books, and reading. Thank
you for remembering her with such beautiful greeting cards... and for winter
evenings spent with your feet up, chatting in front of the wood stove. Thank
you for trusting her with confidential matters, and for being trustworthy
with hers. Thank you for sharing the plants from your garden with her, and
allowing her to share hers with you. From time to time Jessie would say,
"Over all the years, I've never had a bad neighbor. So thank you for being
such great neighbors. And for all of you who have stood by her so faithfully
during the months of her recent illness ... thank you.
Think where man's glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had
such friends."
