OBITUARY: Stanley Canning
The funeral of the late Stanley Canning whose death occurred at an early
hour Monday Morning was held last Wednesday afternoon from his late
residence, and was largely attended. The service at the home was conducted
by Rev. E.A. Kirker, pastor of Trinity United Church and at the grave by the
Knights of Pythias and Independent Order of Oddfellows of which lodges
deceased was a valued member. The members of both lodges marched from the
residence to the United Cemetery, where interment was made. The late Mr.
Canning was a son of the late Frederick and Jane Canning of Port Greville
where he resided until about four years ago when he moved with his family to
Parrsboro. He was well known in Parrsboro and surrounding districts. He was
a very proficient paper hanger and painter. He was 54 years of age. He is
survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Cassie Merriam of Port Greville,
also one son, Arleigh, radio operator at the Lord Nelson Hotel, Halifax; one
sister, Mrs. Geo. Bates, Fox River and one brother, Henry Canning, residing
in Springhill. The pallbearers were Capt. Wm. Durant and Fred Sterling,
fellow brothers in the Knights of Pythias Lodge, and A. F. Sencabaugh and R.
Fife, fellow brothers in the I.O.O.F. The hymns sung were: "Nearer My God To
Thee" and "The Sands of Time Are Sinking". The floral tributes were many and
beautiful, testifying to the esteem held for the deceased in the town and
community.
