Harry Alden Newcombe
1932-2013
It is with deep sorrow we announce the death of Harry Alden Newcombe on
November 29, 2013. Alden was born in Springhill, September 23, 1932 to Harry
and Rose (Coon) Newcombe.
He was active in the Cadet Corps, earning trophies for marksmanship and
rising to the rank of Major. He graduated from Springhill High School and
joined the RCMP in 1954. Alden spent most of his 26 year career serving in
Newfoundland, a place he loved dearly, Achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant
in charge of security at the Gander Airport before retiring. Alden was an
avid hunter with rifle and bow. He volunteered helping the Forestry
Department with tagging and checking wildlife in Newfoundland. This work was
a joy to him.
Upon his retirement from the RCMP he worked as director of Lakeside Seniors
Home in Gandor and as a representative for K.E.M. products, and
Confederation Life insurance before fully retiring. He loved horses and
enjoyed his horse, Amigo before becoming ill. He was a carpenter and loved
working with wood. His nephews and nieces enjoyed the rocking horses he made
for them. His log home on Lynn Mountain was his pride and joy where he
enjoyed the wildlife that visited his property.
Alden provided well for his family and took great pride in his grandchildren
and their accomplishments. He was a brother you could always call on and get
support. He was a caring and interested uncle and great uncle to the young
people in his family. Alden was an active member of All Saints Church,
serving as Vestry member and Warden. He worked long hours on the maintenance
of the Church Buildings.
Alden is survived by his wife, Edith (Parsons) Newcombe of Gander
Newfoundland, sons, Todd (Jwanita) of Hyas, Sask, Carl "Buck" (Sandra) of
Grandfalls, Nfld; daughter, Lisa (Dale) Praught of Lakefield, ON;
grandchildren, Tyrel, Justin and Tristen Newcombe of Hyas, Sask, Jake &
Danielle of Lakefield ON; sisters, Pearl McCabe of Bible Hill, Jean Dickson
& Rose Nicholson, both of Springhill, NS and cousins in the U.K., U.S.A. and
N.S. Also left to mourn is his loving partner Brenda Harrison and her family
who cared for Alden through Hospital stays and at home.
Arrangements are under the direction of A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill.
Cremation has taken place and a visitation will be held at St. Cecilia's
Chapel, All Saints Church on Friday, December 6, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. A
celebration of Aldens life will be held at All Saints Anglican Church,
Springhill on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tory
Byrne officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at the Rodney Cemetery
at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, All Saints Hospital,
All Saints Church or the charity of your choice.
