Not trying to butt into the conversation but I have the “niece”, Margaret Mason Donaldson possibly married to Webber Nathan Mills, a Lumberman born 18 Jan 1889 in Shulie. Married 16 Jun 1915, Methodist, Nappan. Webber died 26 Nov 1921 at River Hebert.
Margaret says her parents are Robert I. Donaldson and Effie C. (?) but she was born in Nappan on her marriage record.
As for legal divorces, sometimes back then, they didn’t happen. A couple would separate with one going to another county and re-marrying as a spinster or bachelor. Today, it’s more difficult with better records.

I checked the Court for Divorce and didn't find a divorce for John Rector and Margaret but have no idea about annulment records. Perhaps a church record might show that but I don't know for sure. There may be someone on this list who is much more in tune than I am, so maybe you'll get an answer yet. regards, Penny

Thank-you for your reply, Penny. I'm not sure what the legal marrying age was in Nova Scotia in 1897, but on that marriage record, Maggie's age was listed as 18. We know that my great-grandmother was born in 1881, so she would actually have been 16 at the time of that marriage, and if she didn't have the consent of her parents (or guardians?), perhaps that could have been a reason for annulment. Do you know if t here would be any record of annulment, or are such records never available?

Hello, I have Margaret in my database, based on the marriage to John Leander Rector. The second marriage to Robert William Simpson on 1906 states Margaret was a spinster. Based on the listed parentage in both of these marriages it appears they are one and the same people. There's a nine year gap in the marriage dates so I wonder if Margaret's first marriage may have been anulled? John Leander went on to marry again in 1919 to Jessie Ripley and in this case he was listed as a bachelor. I don't believe there were any children by John and Margaret (Maggie). I have copies of the death certificates of Robert and Margaret Somerville and note that the son who informed of Margaret's death states he r parents as Unknown Donaldson and Unknown Mason. Perhaps he didn't know the true identity of her parents.
I have a considerable amount of information on Donaldson's but not this particular line, so I was intrigued by your message to see if they might have fit into the lines I have. All my lines originated from Perthshire,Scotland and lived in Colchester and Halifax Nova Scotia and some immigrated to New Zealand and the USA. I believe your line came from Inverneshire???.
