MACHIAS - Virginia (Schoppee) Cheney died Oct. 15, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. She was born April 17, 1930, daughter of the late Millard F. Schoppee and Evelyn (Miller) Schoppee. Mrs. Cheney graduated from Machias High School and the University of Maine at Machias. She received her master's degree from the University of Maine, Orono, and did her doctoral work at Vanderbilt University. Her teaching career began in a one-room school at Whitneyville. She was a teacher and principal at the University of Maine at Machias Campus School. When the Campus School closed, Mrs. Cheney began a teaching career in the education department of the university and retired from the University of Maine at Machias as vice president of academic affairs. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Bernard L Cheney; her daughter, Beverly (Cheney) Edwards and her husband, Dr. John Edwards; three grandsons, Benjamin of Providence, R.I., Matthew of Austin, Texas, and Peter Edwards of Spring, Texas; a sister, Rebecca (Schoppee) Carlson and husband, Russell Carlson, of North Palm Beach, Fla.; several nieces and a nephew. There will be no visitation or services. A private family committal will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Virginia S. Cheney scholarship, University of Maine at Machias Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, University of Maine at Machias, 9 O'Brien Ave., Machias, ME 04654 or a charity of one's choice. BERNARD LYMAN CHENEY

MACHIAS – Bernard Lyman Cheney died April 19, 2012, at his home after a
brief illness. He was born May 4, 1923, in Lubec, the son of Reginald
Merideth and Margaret (Yorke) Cheney.

He graduated from Lubec High School and immediately volunteered for the
paratroopers. He served with distinction through numerous battles in World
War II, including Battle of the Bulge. Bernard concluded his military
service as a sergeant occupying Berlin after the war was completed. Upon
returning to Down East Maine Bernard served in Maine State Police for seven
years and then worked for the General Adjustment Bureau for the remainder of
his career as an insurance adjuster. He enjoyed his long retirement and
spent it working in his garden, spending time with his family and friends,
and occasionally doing boat surveys.

Bernard was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Schoppee Cheney; and his only
child, Beverly Cheney Edwards. He is survived by his three grandsons,
Benjamin, Matthew and Peter Edwards; sister, Pearl Cheney Choquette;
son-in-law, Dr. John A. Edwards; John’s brother, Larry P. Edwards;
sister-in-law, Rebecca Schoppee Carlson and family; the Corey family from
Colorado; Jeanine Sullivan of Portland; many more devoted friends and
family. The family extends a special thank you to the many professionals at
Dr. David Rioux’s medical office and at Community Health and Counseling
Services Hospice.

There will be no visitation or services. A private committal will be held at
a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions in
his memory to the Virginia S. Cheney scholarship, University of Maine at
Machias Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, University of Maine at Machias,
9 O’Brien Ave., Machias, ME 04654. Condolences and memories may be shared
