George Arthur Hopkins
The passing of George Arthur Hopkins, 66, of Springhill, occurred at All Saints Hospital on
Sunday, September 15, 2013 after a lengthy illness. George was a son of the late John and Goldie
(Mooring) Hopkins.
George was an elder in the former Saint David's Presbyterian Church, Springhill.
George had been a Sergeant in the Canadian Armed Forces, Air Force Division for twenty-seven
years as a Communications Technician. When younger, he had enjoyed the outdoors, including
hunting and fishing. He was well known as an avid gardener whose greatest delight was sharing
the products of his labour with his family and friends. In 1997 George received the Robert
Bateman Environmental Award for his dedication to composting.
George had been an Akela with various Cub Troops of the Canadian Boy Scouts, having received
several awards for his participation.
George will be sadly missed by his wife of 43 years, Beverly (nee Merritt); a son, Kevin of
Victoria; a daughter Shannon Fretter, of Barrie, ON; grandchildren, Nikolas, Bailey, Jayna,
Madison, Jalen, and Jordyn; a sister, Geraldine Charters of Moncton; a brother, John (Carol), of
Springhill; a sister-in-law, Mary (Ted) Canning, of Springhill and a brother in law, Jim
(Laverne) Merritt, of Springhill.
George was predeceased by his parents.
Arrangements are under the care and supervision of A.H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street,
Springhill (902-597-2361) from where visitation will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Tuesday,
September 17, 2013. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 18, 2013
from the funeral home with The Reverend Elizabeth Davies officiating. Burial to follow in the
Rodney Cemetery.
Donations in memory of George may be made to the Saint James Presbyterian Church, Oxford; The
Canadian Liver Foundation or a charity of one's choice.
