Evelyn (Rice) Bickerton
Born: May 19th, 1923
Passed on: September 15th, 2013
Evelyn died at her home in Sydney, surrounded by her children, Alexander, Jim (Theresa), Bob (Dude), Ken (Dar) and Janet. She was born in Sydney in 1923, the daughter of Parker Rice and Libby MacNeill and sister to Robert and Margaret all of whom predeceased her. Evelyn was also predeceased by her husband John Bickerton who died this past November and her son Paul, who died in 1980. Evelyn had five grandchildren, Neil, Ben, Luke, Paul and Lydia. Evelyn studied at Acadia University before completing her nursing diploma at Jeffrey Hale Hospital in Quebec City. She then studied public health at the University of Manitoba graduating in 1948. She worked for the VON and Public Health in Kentville where she met her husband John and after raising her six children she worked as the staff health nurse at Sydney City Hospital, where she had many friends and was well respected for her gentle manner and compassion. Many times we heard how "sweet" our mother was, and no truer words have been spoken. Evelyn has been a very stoic, enduring and loving presence in our lives and she will be greatly missed. Evelyn lived a quiet life, enjoyed her home life immensely and the friends of her children who came in and out the doors constantly. They were always welcome. She was a woman of strong, quiet Christian faith and was a member of the United Baptist Church for her entire life. Evelyn’s children and loved ones would like to thank all those people who made it possible for her to live at home for the last number of years - the Continuing Care Program (Darlene Watson), her many personal care workers from City Homemakers (those who had a special friendship with Evelyn - you know who you are!), the VON, and Clara Bickerton. Please forgive us if we have not mentioned all of those who were important to Mom, as there were many. Evelyn’s family invite you to celebrate her life this Friday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at the United Baptist Church (on Charlotte and Townsend) with a lunch to follow. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers please give to a charity of one’s choice. “Yeah though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall
fear no evil for thou art with me.” Online condolences may be sent to our web page at www.chantfuneralhome.com.
