John and Nellie VAN DER WEIL bought the Pugwash Home Hardware on June 1 from Bob BONA of Enfield Home Hardware.

Thursday, June 14, 1973.

Lightning on Wednesday evening caused a spectacular fire when the Cumberland County Exhibition arena was destroyed.  The flames spread to the 4-H Club barn which was badly gutted.  Firemen succeeded in controlling the blaze before it spread to the nearby curling club.

Thursday, June 13, 1963.

Rev. and Mrs. Ross CRIBBIS and three girls left for Provindence, RI.  Mr. Cribbis was pastor of the Oxford Church of the Nazarene for three years.

Earl JAMIESON and Phillip OXLEY who were fishing lobsters out of Wallace became lost in fog on June 6 and eventually landed at Point Prim, PEI.

A meeting of persons interested in forming a historical society was held at Pugwash on June 4.

Died - Mrs. Owen FARNAN, 72, the former Oressa REID of Oxford, June 8, at Timmins, ON.

Claude E. THOMPSON was installed as president of Oxford Home and School Association on June 12, succeeding president G. W. MCLELAN.

Donald O. MATTINSON, formerly of Pugwash, has been appointed postmaster at Shearwater, Halifax.

To provide space for his steadily expanding business, Mark A. GILLIS is building a 30-ft extension on the rear of his store at Pugwash.

Died - W. Russell SLADE, 43, pastor of the Kentucky Baptist Church, a native of Oxford, June 13, at Kentucky, ON.
Died - George Wesley RIPLEY, 80, formerly of Port Howe, May 31, at Canal Flats, BC.
Died - William THOMPSON, June 16, while delivering mail at Streets Ridge.

Thursday, June 17, 1943.

At the institute rally at Nappan on June 10, Mrs. A. SMITH, River Philip, was elected president for the coming year.

Eight months after building began, the U.S. Alaskan Highway was completed months ahead of schedule and opened to military traffic.

Graduation exercises for Oxford High School will be held in the Capitol Theatre tomorrow evening.

Died - Thomas P. FRASER, 78, well-known manager of the Sterling Hotel, Oxford Jct., June 9, in Amherst.
