It is with deep sadness that we must announce the sudden passing of W. Merlin "Mike" Smith, age 81, of Southampton. Mike passed away early Thursday morning, September 5, 2013. Born in South Brook, NS, he was a son of the late William and Annie (Lavers) Smith.
Mike was a great husband, friend, father, grand and great
grandfather. He was a kind and gentle hearted man who loved to tease and share stories. He enjoyed four wheeling, spending time at his camp, and looked forward to spring when he used to operate his own Maple Sugar Woods.
He will be dearly missed by his best friend and loving partner Geraldine (McNutt) McDermott, Southampton; daughter Julia (Maynard) Silvea, Hamilton, ON; step-sons, Carl Hatton, Springhill and Layton (Anita) McDermott, South Brook; step-daughters Jennifer Hatton LeBlanc, Kingston, NS and Marion (Rev. Bill) McLeod, Wilmot, NS; several grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife Mildred E. Hayman, his second wife Joan Rector Hatton, infant daughter Bonnie Jean and step-daughter Barb Jewkes. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was also predeceased by brother Hazen and sisters Minnie, Vera and Betty.
In keeping with Mike's wishes,
cremation has taken place under the care and supervision of A H Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, NS (902-597-2361). A graveside committal service will take place at the Mapleton Cemetery on September 8, 2013 at 2 pm, Rev. Elizabeth Davies officiating.
