Canadian National Railways has made application to abandon the 16-mile long Short Line between
Oxford Junction and Pugwash.

Thirty Years Ago
Wednesday, June 8, 1983.

Maritime Telephone and Telegraph Co. Ltd. has distributed ballots seeking the approval of
telephone users in Oxford for the elimination of long distance charges between Oxford and
Amherst exchanges.

The home of Marion THOMPSON, Little River, was extensively damaged by fire last Wednesday evening.

A license to operate a daily bus passenger service between Truro and Tatamagouche was approved
at a public hearing Wednesday. John COULTER, operator of a Tatamagouche funeral and ambulance
service, expects to start service as early as June 13.

Died - Freeman Henry CARTER, 75, formerly of East Leicester, in Welland, ON.

Forty Years Ago
Thursday, June 7, 1973.

Jimmy O'BRIEN of Chester, formerly of Roslin, has been hospitalized after being severely burned
in an electrical accident while at work in Lantz.

Cumberland Coal Mines Ltd. has received an extension to July of a $118,567 grant to continue
operation of its mine in Rodney. Murray REYNOLDS and Reginald SMITH of Springhill are co-owners
of the mine which at present employs about 40 men.

Arbor Day, years ago an annual event, was reinstated this year at Oxford Regional High School.
On June 1, pupils planted 50 Norway spruce and placed a plaque commemoration the centennial of
Joseph HOWE.

Donald SWEETE is working on a service station on Upper Main St. on the former Lockhart property,
as well as levelling land for a motel nearby.

Died - John Craig ETTER, 19, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Etter, Oxford, May.

years, Frances E. (Langille); daughters, Gwen Drummond (John), Malagash; Karen Munroe, and
companion, Gerry Jollimore, Debert; sisters, Hazel Swan, Leota Murray (Lloyd), Emma Myers
(Arthurs). Predeceased by son, Steven; brother, Clarnece; sisters, Marguerite, Beatrice and
Catherine.
