I recently received a copy of "Cemeteries of North Cumberland" from the North Cumberland Historical Society. I have a hunch that there may be an error. I believe it may be caused by fading stones.
In the Palmerston Cemetery (Pugwash) Section stuck in between some VanBuskirks is this inscription:
William Stewart died April 14th 1891 aged 46 years
A light from our household gone,
A voice we loved stilled.
A place is vacant by our hearth,
Which Never can be filled.
Then in with the Stewarts (in the same cemetery) is:
Stewart William Stewart died April 11th 1891 aged 16
My thought is that the "4's" in the first entry were interpreted as "1's" in the second entry (possibly at a later date during a revision of the book). It is however possible that they are separate stones and the dates and names are mere coincidences.
This also makes me wonder if the "William Stewart" among the VanBuskirk's is actually a "William Stewart VanBuskirk" or was just a "Stewart" buried near many VanBuskirks and then included in the book with them. Does anyone know anything about this? I'll also send this to the Historical Society and see what they've got to say. Wish I were a local and could go check it out for myself!
