I was wrong. It is obviously not about when a birthday occurred. This could be a really important hint into the lives of our relatives in that time. I hope we can find out what it means.

I can't figure it out either. I have found a great Aunt and her husband who are one day apart for birthdays May 19 and May 20. He has a bracket and she doesn't!. There are no dates on the census forms that I have found so it really wouldn't make sense to divide it up that way anyways.
Any other ideas? I have seen circles, brackets and checkmark things under the number.

Do you suppose it could mean that the birthday had already occurred that year, or that it hadn't? Just a guess.

I have taken a very quick look at the 1921 census for Oxford and for Parrsboro. In both cases, the ages for many people are contained within brackets. At first, I thought that might indicate an "estimated" age... but now realize there are far too many bracketed ages. Does anyone have a better guess?
