"Hester married (1) Hiram White, sailor, son of Sea Capt. John & Mary White,
at Advocate 28 Sept. 1897. According to my mother, Hester's daughter, he had
his Captain's papers at 21, and was in Havana Bay when the battleship Maine
was blown up. He was blown into the water, rescued by his crew, brought
home, where he died leaving her with two very small children. (plus a child
stillborn). In the 1901 census he is listed as a 'laborer'---(my mother
doesn't believe that for a moment!)
