OBITUARY
Captain Charles T. Knowlton
Parrsboro - Cap. Charles Tupper Knowlton passed away at his daughter home, Mrs Karl McNamara, in Vancouver, Jan. 28th. He was born 84 years ago in Advocate. He married Alida Ward and made his home in Wharton. His wife passed away ten years ago in Vancouver where they had made their home since he retired from active service fourteen years ago. He visited his old home in Wharton several times since then but his last trip was made five years ago.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Parrsboro. He was a deep sea captain and in his early life sailed in foreign trade in sailing vessels. Later he was given a position in the Gov't Fishery Protection Service when Sir. Chas. Tupper was Premier of Canada. This was the Schr. "Vigilant". He was then given the Buoy Boat "Aberdeen" which he himself brought from England. After several years he was again in the Fishery Service in the "Osprey" until he was given command of the Gov't Cruiser "Canada" first of Canada's navy. He brought this cruiser from England as well. After several years he was again transferred to the Gov't Survey boat "St. Gulinair." Several years later he was made Supt. of Gov't Car Ferries which position he held until fourteen years ago when he resigned from active service. He was a first class navigator. During all his years at sea he has a record of never losing a ship. He leaves a family of six, four daughters, Della, Mrs. Everett Knowlton; Gertrude, Mrs. Philip Spicer; Clara, Mrs. Harl McNamara; Alice, Mrs. Frank Mawby, all of Vancouver, and two sons, Kenneth who lives on the old homestead at Wharton and Lownay(sic), Imperial Oil Agent at Parrsboro.
