OBITUARY
Chester A Canning
Maitland, Aug. 14 - In the sudden passing of Chester A. Canning on Sunday, August 2, friends in the village of Noel Shore and surrounding districts have lost one of their best loved and esteemed citizens.
Mr. Canning was born 68 years ago at Port Greville, N.S., an only son of the late Isaac and Olive Hatfield Canning. Mr Canning was active in Masonic circles being a charter member, P.M. and Historian of W.D. Lawrence Lodge, A.F. and A.M., No 101, Maitland; a member of Keith Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Truro; Past Sr. Grand Steward, Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia; Past Patron, Cobequid Chapter, O.E.S., No. 39, Maitland. Mr. Canning spent 17 years in the Merchant Marine. Later in life he was employed at carpentry. In 1948 while thus engaged he suffered a serious accident from which he never fully recovered.
He was an enthusiastic fisherman and enjoyed being in God's great out of doors, with its flowers, birds, and animals. He will be sadly missed in his home and by those who knew him best.
Funeral services were held on Thursday August 6, from Lower Selmah United Church. Rev. S.H. Haslam of Kensington, P.E.I, (a former pastor) officiated at the service assisted by Rev. D. R. Jennings, Maitland, and Rev. A. C. Snow, rector of the Maitland Parish. Members of the O.E.S. formed a guard of honour at the church and graveside. Officers were flower bearers.
Interment took place in the family plot beside the church where a masonic ceremony was conducted by G.R. Faulkner, W.M., assisted by R.G. McKeil, Chaplain.
Dr. P.S. Cochrane, Wolfville, Grand Master of Masons, attended the funeral as well as many others from Masonic Lodges, in Truro and Stewiacke.
Surviving are his widow, two sisters; Mrs. J. H. Slater, Port Greville, N.S.; Mrs. Roy Morris, Advocate Harbour, N.S.; several nieces and nephews, also a brother-in-law, W. Campbell of Noel Shore, with whom the Cannings have made their home for several years.
