OBITUARY: Mrs. E.O. Carter
The death of Mrs. Martha (Holmes) Carter, widow of E.O. Carter, occurred at
Highland View Hospital, October 18, at 3 o'clock after an illness of about
six weeks. A sad feature of the event is the second bereavement of the
family in a month, Mr. Carter having passed away four weeks before. Mrs.
Carter was born 66 years ago in Parrsboro. Most of her married life was
lived at Lower Maccan coming to Southampton a few years ago. She was a woman
of great business ability and a living wife and mother of a faithful worker
in community and Church activities ever ready to help any who needed her
aid. She was loved by a wide circle of friends and neighbors and will be
greatly missed by all. She leaves to mourn a loving mother, three sons,
William O. of R.C.A.F. Halifax; Lee of Springhill; and Clayton of
Southampton; and four daughters, Stella, Mrs. Angus Holden, Lower Maccan;
Elsie, [line missing; Mrs. Ross Canning, Springhill; Edna,] Mrs. Kenneth
Chapman, Bayfield, N.B.; and Mildred, Mrs. Raymond Harrison of Southampton
[missing is ; a daughter, Helen, Mrs. George Keefe died six years ago. She
leaves also, three brothers, Bertram and Irvine Holmes of Amherst, and James
Holmes of Winnipeg Twenty grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were
conducted at her home, Southampton on Saturday at 2 p.m., by Rev. H.M.
Manzer of the Baptist Church and Rev. William MacDonald of the United
Church, Southampton. The hymns were: "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", "The
Lord Is My Shepherd". A duet "The Unclouded Day" was beautifully rendered by
Mrs. Richie and Mr. Fred Moore. The hymns: "Safe In The Arms Of Jesus" and
"We'll Never Say Good-bye In Heaven" were sung as the remains were carried
out. The flowers were beautiful. Interment took place in the Church of
England Cemetery, Amherst, with Rev. J.E. Sheely of Christ Church holding
the committal service at the grave.
