I don't think the following obituary has been posted before:
Sept. 2, 1909 Amherst Daily News (received from Kathryn Jeffers):
Thomson Station, Sept. 3:
The home of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Mattinson, Albion St., Amherst was sadly darkened on Sunday morning, Aug 3rd when their beautiful little daughter Jean, their only child, passed from earth to the Better Land. She was an unusually bright and attractive little darling and though only five and a half years old seemed much older in conduct and conversation. Her death was caused by membraneous croup which did not appear at all dangerous until Saturday afternoon when symptoms of an alarming nature developed and though everything possible that two physicians and loving parents could do, was done to save the little life she passed away taking with her the light and brightness of a happy home and leaving behind her, hearts almost broken, Oh so sad and lonely. On Friday she seemed almost well, and asked to go to meet her papa as he came from work, on being told that she had better not go out replied - "Then I'll hide so that Papa can't find me and he will think
I died and went to Jesus". Her remains were brought to Thompson by train and followed from there by a large number of relatives and friends to the church where a beautiful sermon by her pastor, Rev. A. Hockin was listened to by a congregation not all relatives, but all mourners of dear little Jean lying so still in death looking as if enjoying a sweet sleet admid beautiful flowers. Her parents are comforted by the surety that what is their loss is her great gain, and that she is now,
"Safe" in the Arms of Jesus
Seaf on his gentle breast"
May we all be as ready when the call comes. Interment was made in the new cemetery in Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Mattinson have returned to their pretty home here not far from the little grave so precious to them.
Hope this helps someone,
Gerry
