in a siding at the Sifto Salt Company plant in nearby Nappan, and the victim died in Highland

OBITUARY
19-Year-Old Amherst Youth Drowns in Stone Quarry

Gary MACDONALD, a 19-year-old Amherst youth was drowned yesterday afternoon while swimming in
the Willow Street stone quarry on the outskirts of town. The body was recovered after grappling
operations were carried out by the Amherst police for nearly four hours. Coroner Dr. H. A.
Myers will make his decision regarding an inquest after hearing statements of eyewitnesses.
This was the second fatal accident in 30 years at the abandoned quarry, a favorite "swimming
hole" for Amherst youngsters for a long period. There were a large number of other swimmers
present at the time and witnesses said MacDonald slipped when running down the steep bank to
dive into the water. He struck a floating plank when he failed to clear the edge by a
sufficient margin and did not reappear on the surface. The accident occurred at ?? p.m. and
MacDonald's mother and younger sister had just arrived at the quarry by car and was driving
around the far side. Skin diving equipment was used by Constable Pomeroy of the RCMP and also
Fred Jesty of Amherst, but they were unable to see in the murky waters in the 40-foot deep
quarry and grappling irons were later used. The boy's uncle, Garnet MacDonald, who was assisting
the police, located the body at 7:30. MacDonald, who had recently completed an electricians
course in Halifax, had been employed in Amherst and during the past few days had secured
employment in Moncton. He had attended the Amherst Regional High School and was a popular
student, taking part in athletics and other school activities. He is survived by his mother,
Mrs. Leona MacDonald, one sister, Wendy and one brother, Dwight, both at home; a half-sister,
Mrs. Philip McCormick, in Truro, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Miner Stone, Oxford
Junction. His father, Alexis MacDonald, was killed several years ago in a fright train accident
at Nappan. The remains are resting at Campbell's Funeral Home and funeral service will be held
from Baptist Church on Monday afternoon at 3:30. Interment in Amherst Cemetery. (From the
Amherst Daily News Newspaper, published Saturday, 25 June 1960, page 1.)

OBITUARY

MACDONALD, Dwight A. - 53, St. Margarets Bay. The family of Dwight A. MacDonald announces with
profound sadness his passing on July 5, 2000, at the VG Site, QEII. For 10 months, Dwight
battled leukemia ferociously and with a great sense of humor. We are left with a sense of
warmth and self-worth that he demonstrated to us just how much he wanted to remain with us. A
chapter has closed but the book he wrote for us and with us remains open. We, the family and
friends, will continue to add chapters for him to enjoy. Dwight was born in Amherst on January
26, 1947, and spent his early life there. He lived his adult life in Truro, Moncton and finally
in Halifax. He worked for many years with the pipe division of L.E. Shaw Ltd. and opened his
own business, Dwight A. MacDonald Ltd. (water and sewage pumping station) in the early 1990's
and continued to operate his company until his illness. Dwight was a member of the Austin Owls
Club in Dartmouth and the Elks Club of Moncton. He was an avid sailor and skier and was a
member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Club, the St. Margarets Bay Sailing Club and Ski
Wentworth. Dwight is survived by his wife and best friend, Marilyn Purdy, Todds Island, St.
Margarets Bay; daughter, Stacey MacDonald, Truro/Halifax; his son, Kevin MacDonald (wife Tara
and new granddaughter Hailey), Lantz; and his daughter, Kristen Turner (husband Christopher and
new grandson Maxwell), St. Margarets Bay. He is also survived by his mother, Leona MacDonald,
Amherst; sister, Wendy (Doug) Rhindress, Amherst; sister, Lonie (Phil) McCormack, Stewiacke; his
special cousin, Dave (Lynn) Elmers, Central West Rivers; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles
and cousins. He is also survived by a multitude of friends who, during the last 10 months,
became family. Dwight was predeceased by his father, Alexis K. MacDonald and brother, Gary E.
MacDonald. He was a gentle giant of a man and has set an example for us that will live on
forever. The funeral will be held in St. George's Anglican Church, Head of St. Margarets Bay,
at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, with visitation in Ronald A. Walkers Funeral Home, Tantallon,
today, July 7, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. (From the Halifax
Chronicle-Herald / The Mail-Star Newspaper, published Friday, 7 July 2000.)
