Walter S. Bentley
Truro, Oct. 29 - There passed away early Wednesday morning, October 27, at
his home in South Maitland, Walter S. Bentley. He was born in Port Greville
in 1888, a son of the late George E. and Evelyn Merriam Bentley. His younger
life was spent in following the sea in his father's ships, before coming to
Truro about 40 years ago. Since that time he has been associated in the
grocery business in Truro, where he worked until his sudden passing,
although he made his home in South Maitland. Mr. Bentley was a member of the
United Church at South Maitland, where he was an Elder of the church and a
member of the choir. He is survived by his wife, the former Lydia Thompson
of South Maitland and one adopted son, Jimmie, at home. Two sons predeceased
him, Lloyd, who was killed in action in World War II in the R.C.A.F. off
Iceland, and Earle, who passed away in 1950 [sic, 1951]. Also surviving are
three brothers, Jack and Wicks of Truro; Seaman of Toronto; four sisters,
***Annie (Mrs. H.L. Shaw), California***; ***Myrtle, (Mrs. Patterson),
Framingham, Mass.***; Erma (Mrs. H.L. Murray), New York; and Hope, (Mrs.
E.M. Ogilvie), Truro. The funeral was held this afternoon, October 29, at
2:30 o'clock, from the United Church at South Maitland, conducted by Rev.
Mr. Jennings. Burial in the Church Cemetery.
