Obit (1959) - Col. William Thomas LETCHER

I don't think the following obituary has been posted before:

April 9, 1959 Oxford Journal:
Springhill - A wide circle of relatives and friends mourned the passing on Wednesday evening, April 1st, of Col. William Letcher at All Saints Hospital after a brief illness.  Born in Chignecto in 1884, he was the son of the late Col. M. Letcher and Mrs. Letcher.  He received his education in Springhill schools and Nova Scotia Technical College.  In 1909 he married Carolyn Jean Matherson of Conns Mills.  At the age of 17 he was a lieutenant in the Canadian militia and during World War One he went overseas with D Company, 40th Battalion, later attaining the rank of Lieutenant in order to proceed to France.  On demobilization he was with 193 Cumberland Highlanders, in which battalion he became a lieutenant colonel, a rank he held until retirement, when he was placed on the reserve force.  In 1925 he started a merchandising business at Northport where he remained until 1945, returning to Springhill where he purchased a business at Miller Corner.
This he conducted until he retired in September, 1956.  He was a member of the Wesley United Church, Masonic Lodge, Orange Lodge, Canadian Legion, and a life member of Knights of Pythias.  He also served one term on the town council.  He is survived by his wife and two daughters, (Christina) Mrs. Kenneth Pineo of Amherst; (Patricia) Mrs. Douglas Parker of Springhill, and two granddaughters.  Also by one sister, Mrs. D.L. McAulay; six brothers, John, Frank, Archie, Charles, Arthur and Austin.  The funeral was held from his residence Saturday, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Desmond McConnell officiating.  Interment was made in Hillside Cemetery.

Hope this helps someone,
Gerry
